2 Reviews of the Newgate 3

Bought this tent July 2014 for myself and wife plus dog. We had previously owned a Lanai reef and this seems an updated version with the attached awning which we thought would be handy in rain.
First thoughts was that the polycotton was of good quality and the colour was pleasant. We bought a footprint as well to protect the bottom and pitching was fairly straightforward which 3 large aluminium poles to be slotted into colour coded pockets. Being seasoned Outwell campers we had seen the erection videos about how best to lift and place the poles, zip in the bathtub groundsheet and peg out all the ties and guy ropes. There are quite a lot of these so whilst you have that feeling of we are almost done when the poles are in and the tent is standing you then have to spend another 20 minutes pegging everything down!
Thoughts on using this tent is that for 2 it is comfortable but cosy. We also camped with our 14 year old in his own pup tent but of course when it was raining he wished to sit in with us which was a bit of a squeeze. One of us ended up sitting on the bed in the sleeping inner most of the time. The rain on our first outing was not a problem, no leaks at all and the awning was good to be able to take off coats before entering the tent but not big enough to sit under really. The best thing about these tents are large panoramic windows which also have curtains to give you that privacy when you like, we liked them as we could sit in the tent enjoying a cuppa whilst laughing at everyone else trying to keep dry in their own set ups.
The only negative with the tent really is the amount of time it requires to set up and decamp. On our arrival the weather was fair and we had the afternoon ahead of us to take our time and set it up which took us roughly about 1.30 mins when you put all the furniture in too. However when packing up we had to be off the site by 11am and it was also raining. I ended up putting on my wetsuit to do the job and stood in the rain whilst the wife passed everything she could out of the tent before we both got soaked taking it down. We only loosely rolled it up and stuffed it in the back of the car as we knew we would have to erect it again when home to dry it. However this experience was enough to put us off camping with this tent again as it is a heavy tent and does require the time to put up and take down again!

Recently bought this tent for shorter weekends away. We were not disappointed. This is a good quality tent, only time will tell how good. It is perfect for couples who want a better quality tent.
We paid £500 inc. The footprint from Go Outdoors.
Being polycotton the pack size is not that dissimilar to out Montana 6P. So don''t think its a 3 man backpacking tent. The upside is nice cool tent on a hot day, a warm tent on a cool night and very quiet in heavy rain. There are many nice features like pockets and tinted windows.
The inner just gets a double mattress in with a little room for the bags. The living area just has enough room for two chairs, your cooking gear and in our case a large dog bed.
The canopy front is great but I found extending it with a tarp made it very usable.
There are a lot of guy ropes and the floating guy ropes do stick out a long way and quite a lot of time setting up, but not difficult for reasonably seasoned camper.
Its perhaps a bit much for a 2 night stay but 3 or more in a quality tent although not cheep.
4-4.5 out of 5
