4 Reviews of the North Sea L
By: Peter Simmons Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2009 Rating:
Already owning an Outwell Hartford XL, but finding it difficult for two people to erect, we bought the Northsea which proved perfect. First outing I went with my granddaughter and it was easy to erect with her minimal help [I since erected it on my own in the garden this year for an airing, see picture] and it's a tough, stable and enjoyable tent with lots of room. As with all tents I think the manufacturers sleeps 4 is over the top, I always halve the total they say, and for two people this is a splendid tent, with four it might be cramped. I don't have experience of it in bad weather since the weather in Shropshire was great, but I saw one in a TV program on the Hebrides, it was in the background as the presenter interviewed someone, they were both braced against a strong wind and finding it difficult to keep upright, the Northsea in the background was rock solid! So if you want to do some extreme camping in comfort, this is the one. As with all Hartfords, the workmanship is superb, you do get what you pay for.

This is our second tent since we started camping a couple of years ago and due to a catastrophic collapse of the old one during some high winds, we wanted a tent that was simple, not too big/high and strong. This is certainly it. We have 2 small kids and it is easy for one parent to erect/dismantle while the other is on entertaining duty! It is very cosy inside but there's enough room to wait out any wet weather for an hour or two. We love the polycotton and it dries out fairly quickly. It doesn't have a porch so we are thinking of investing in one to go with it as it would be very useful to cook under if it's raining. Our only criticism is that, while the bed pods have sown in ground sheets, the living area does not, and even if you put the centre ground sheet in correctly, you get a draught round your feet when it's cold outside. All in all though a GREAT tent.

Overall a very good tent. We particularly wanted a poly cotton tent for warm weather / foreign camping trips and durability. The overall build quality is excellent and the design and space inside make it a very comfortable. Although I would think with 4 adults in there plus gear it would be very cramped. The sleeping pods are a bit small. My main criticisms are a. Only one hanging point inside. B. The doors have only one way zips meaning the the door cannot be opened top down to provide a bit of ventilation. C. The curtains seem to have been sewn in upside down, whereby the curtain is rolled up at the bottom of the window, therefore any condensation runs straight down and wets the curtain!
Pitching is relatively straight forward (45 mins from taking out the bag to moving in) even with the 2 of us.

I already own several Outwell tents but wanted a poly cotton one. Excellent quality for a very reasonable price. It is lovely to sleep in especially in warmer weather. The sleeping pods are quite small for two adults with gear but a fantastic tent which we use for two people.
