3 Reviews of the Oakland XL Front Awning

We are a family of four, two adults, two children aged six & four. We made this purchase to accompany our lovely Outwell Oakland XL & wasn't disappointed.
We love our tent & spent a lot of time in it playing games/cards/crafting etc so we wanted an awning that would allow us to store, cook & dine without any of the equipment being in the actual main part of the tent. It fitted the bill perfectly.
I won't bore you with the tech side of the item as you should have already done your homework, however, it is large enough for us to have our fold up four seat table, our cooker stand, cool boxes, shoe's, balls & all other outside equipment in it still with room to spare.
Initially we found it fairly tricky to erect, but once we had figured it out, it was fine, pitching time (10 minutes). It has a bathtub style ground sheet (Not sewn in) which you can easily fit & is great for if its slightly muddy outside. The windows are great & allow the light nicely.
If you want all of the above, I suggest you buy one, it won't let you down.

We have just bought this to replace our side extention which to be honest was a waste as whenever it was windy we seemed to have to take it down.
Anyway back to this and what a difference it makes. Its lovely and bright and closed in so even if the weathers rubbish you can still see out like with the tent. Its also great in the wind as we found last weekend up the hill at Robin Hoods Bay.
Its extra space for cooking and storing things is great now where before we hated it as most of the time you got cold and wet and had to keep things in the tent or car where now you don't.
The only thing we find difficult is putting it up right as it has hook attachments and if you don't get them right it goes a bit lopsided as we've discovered but once we get the hang of it it will be fine.
We would recommend this over any other awning or extention for this tent as it really does make such a difference.
When we next go away I will get some photos and put them on, i meant to last weekend but somehow forgot.

We had hoped to use our Oakland without needing to add an extension of any sort as we just wanted something quick and easy to pitch/strike for weekends. However, 2012 being such a wet year, on our first weekend using our Oakland, despite it being a great tent that would otherwise have suited our needs perfectly, there was no rainsafe door on our version and because of all of the mud outside, our carpet was in danger of becoming very, very dirty indeed.
So, we bought the front awning. It does everything we expected it to. It was easy to put up and attach to the tent and provided us with a great kitchen area and somewhere to sit and take off muddy boots and shoes before going into the main tent. It has toggle up curtains the same as the tent windows so that you can choose how much privacy/light you want in there. The door can be rolled up, or if you have some king poles, you can put it up to make a canopy. The awning adds approximately 2.5m to the length of the tent, usable space given the sloping front is probably around 2.3m or 2.4m but of course you can use the rest of the floor space to dump small things or muddy shoes, etc.
The poles felt a bit thin in comparison to the main tent but I'm sure that won't cause a problem. I can't comment on how it stands up to wind or rain because on the weekend we tested it, we were blessed with stunning weather. One of the rare weekends in 2012! All in all a great addition to our tent with the quality you come to expect from Outwell.
