6 Reviews of the Oregon 4

Bought this tent as a quick erect festival tent for my wife and I and the two kids.

I'm afraid after a couple of uses we stopped using it for festivals and went back to our bigger and heavier Royal Pescara 8. The Outwell, wasn't very well made, the fibre glass poles snapped in persistent but not heavy wind and it leaked. It was also very cramped for a 4 man. I have been dubious about Outwells ever since. Oh and it was an absolute pain in the neck (literally) to get dressed in, very low indeed.

In the early eighties, when I was a child of 10 I spent most of one year sleeping in the back garden in a standard, cheap ridge tent (the kind where the pole runs down the middle of the entrance). It seems a bit odd now but I loved it and have ever since felt a childish excitement run through me when I know I'm going camping somewhere. (OK. Enough therapy for one day.)

I think it was this endearing naivety that led me to imagine a Gelert Rocky 3 would more than suffice for myself and my girlfriend on long camping trips. Bizarrely, it doesn't. A comfortable alternative to sleeping in the car when en route to where you want to camp- yes, but at 6'1' with an inflatable-mattress dependency I find it a bit too 'basic' for anything longer. So a new tent was required and acquired.

Behold the Outwell Oregon 4. At first all was well (consider the forerunner) and if this were still our main tent I'd probably still be in denial and writing about all the space in the living area and how easy it is to erect and how weather-proof it is and how it's always there at the end of a long walk and how it's green. However, with the other half set to 'explode with joy' in February, we've (I've) upgraded to a tent with standing room so this fella's number has been called.

Essentially there's nothing wrong with it, if you enjoy crawling through Crufts-style obstacle courses, or you're 'below average height' but there's nothing spectacular about it either. It's light. It has some plastic panels you can sort of see through, a confusingly large number of entrances and exits, and, as you can see in the manufacturer's images it will 'easily sleep 4', providing they haven't eaten too much, ever. Too big for overnights, not big enough for anything longer, no sown-in-groundsheet, cheap plasticky feel. Did I mention it's barely tall enough to sit on the floor in?

However, the tent we've replaced it with is a very grown-up, cotton pyramid affair that seems totally detached from my childhood memories, and I suspect the little 10-year-old boy in me who still gets excited about going camping may yet miss this tent.

This is a good tent if you don't mind stooping a lot! I found it very uncomfortable and would have preferred standing height. Great for 2 people as the bedroom is a good size but living area would be a squeeze for more than 2 in my opinion. Very easy to pitch solo and lots of the usual Outwell extras and attention to detail make this a good buy if you are looking for a weekend tent.

This tent is relatively easy to pitch and seems to be able to cope well in most weather conditions, it is also very quick to pack away we can get ours packed up and in the car in about 10mins maximum from start to finish.

We have found the height of the tent is just right for giving you terrible back ache if your are stood inside for too long.

As for condensation ours has been used a total of around 7 times now and we have only experienced condensation inside once on a very cold morning I guess we must be lucky!

Purchased to replace old dome tent, very happy. Easy to put up, just two is fine, would be a bit cramped for more than that. Very spacious living area used mainly for storage of chairs, cooking equipment. Only negative comment would be the condensation in the living area in the mornings.

Bought one of these to replace our old dome tent. Spent a lot of time researching it and deciding between this and the Oregon 5. Decided on this one in the end as I wanted to be able to pitch it if I was on my own. It is fine for the two of us but would be a bit cramped in the living area for more.

It's very easy to put up, even on my own, though on uneven ground you sometimes have to fiddle a bit to make sure there is clearance between the inner and outer.

It survived a very stormy night the first time we used it. Even though the poles and sides thrashed around a lot there were no breakages or leaks.

The only complaint we have is the condensation, it's very bad. We thought it was down to the wet summer the first year we had it but things didn't improve last year. We have all the ventilation open, doors open when we can, don't cook inside or bring damp things in and it still seems like it's raining inside most mornings. We didn't have problems with condensation in our old tent or in the Khyam we've got since so I think it's definitely something about this particular tent.
