1 Reviews of the Rock Lake 5ATC

By: Babywhale  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2017   Rating:

Got this tent at the beginning of September with the footprint and carpet to match. Note that we have decided to part ways with our much loved Yellowstone Falls cotton/poled tent (due to list later this year for sale), as we wanted something lighter and easier to pitch, in fact a tent that one person could pitch solo.

With practice I expect to be able to get this tent out of the bag, inflated and pegged down in about 45 minutes without any assistance. First few pitches have taken about 90 minutes though.

There are a few areas re pitching that could be improved though, or at least where a knack is required. The instructions diagram for pitching is limited and there’s no video. Anyway, firstly, when inflating the tent, on numerous occasions the air would rush out immediately when disconnecting the pump. Eventually managed to get the knack i.E. Twist off quickly and double check first that the valve is not pressed in (or doesn’t inadvertently press in when attaching the connecting hose. Secondly, the front pole is quite difficult to fit without forcing it against the taut pressure of the inflated tent. Have tried numerous ways and found that the best way is to make sure each pole base is secured in the slot at the bottom, and then slowly zip up in equal measure from each side. Also best not to have the front pegged in at all to reduce tautness.

The tent itself is good quality and the air beams feel study. The gothic style gives more height and headroom throughout the tent. The canopy is great for preventing rain from entering the tent when coming through the front door. The polycotton feels high quality, and the colours are pleasing. There are some points that Outwell appear to have cut back on though (which I miss from my old tent). No hanging rails, no zip up curtains and no tent pocket organiser on the inner. Not major issues though.

No leaks on our tent, and for the whole week the beams kept their pressure without any need to adjust.

Main living area is a good usable size. The bedroom can sleep 3/4 comfortably but 5 would be a stretch.

The bag is very heavy, but at least its all in one with the SIG. Wouldn’t want to carry it too far. Could have done with softer/cushioned handles. No problems getting the tent back in the bag.

I would give this a 9/10 but there is one thing that has proven a bit annoying - the front door. There are numerous tie / toggles for tying back the mesh curtain and the door itself. These get in the way when trying to open/close the door. Luckily you are sheltered under the canopy (and you could use the side door instead - we didn’t), but it is a bit annoying especially in the dark, when you can’t see what is causing the obstruction.

We were nervous about going from cotton to polycotton and from poled to air beam, but the risk appears to have paid off. We now have a good sized tent that I can put up by myself, with all the benefits of polycotton, a smart colour, and quality features such as tinted windows, hanging points for lights, and easy EHU entry (including to the bedroom).
