3 Reviews of the Rockwell 3

By: DeanoX  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2017   Rating:

Just taken delivery of our 2018 Rockwell 3 as a weekender for lone camping (Le Mans!) or with the kids.

Main family tent is an Outwell indiana 6 (2007). This demonstrates real progress in key features. Love the overall style. SIG vs bathtub works well. Mesh door on the front was tricky to get the bottom zip engaged but fine once started.

Like the extra cable entries. Inner tent is very well attached to outer - almost over generous in attachment points. Curtains on the front windows a welcome bonus (I hadnt been able to tell from any online source if they had them).

It isn't the 'wave' inner tent format -but probably no issue on a tent this size. Also all pegs the same .I think this is actually an improvement for a tent of this size rather than 3 types as found on larger models.

Pitched very easily on my own (but I can pitch the indiana 6 single handed when needed)

Would have liked maybe a 1 storage pocket under the front windows for the money (as there is no real space on the innner) but that's nit picking.

My major concern is the attachment of the eyebrow porch pole - its clear the seating of this pole is *the* main stress point of the whole tent. The 2018 pictures show it as being part of the guy rope/pole velcro wrap. It's not - its separate. Even in the garden I have added a guy at this point to counter the froce of the pole. Time will tell if its an issue of course.

The zips on mine had extra cords for pulling and the guy ropes are luminous. There are plenty of places to hang torches, in fact, there are cable ties in case you want to add mains/battery pack lighting. I did get condensation but I forgot to open the vents. I purchased the extra footprint and carpet and feel that these accessories really made a difference. The tent was £200, footprint £10 and the carpet £35.

We own this tent, our other being a 2014 Outwell Nevada MP. We use this as a shorter break tent as the Nevada is a touch big for easy quick camps.

I quite like the blue colour although I think it could be said it is a touch boring. The dimensions are great for a couple for a short break. Not sure I would want to be in for extended periods during bad weather as we have a lot of items that need cover in poor weather like cooker, table etc. I think the living space would be quite cramped if we had to place everything inside.

The living space though is plenty big enough in general with a couple of chairs inside. The noticeable thing is the extra space usage that comes from the upright stance of the tent front. Really does make the space more usable, far more so than tents with the slanting frontage.

The bedroom fits a double SIM in with a little to spare for plastic boxes used as wardrobes and storage. There are a few little pockets inside the bedroom pod. There is one tucked away on one side of the pod and three in the more traditional spot running along the side of the pod. One thing that struck me was the bedroom pod was nice and taught with little bagging. No dark ceiling in this tent which does make it lighter early mornings.

It's entry level tent from Outwell and it shows with only one door at the front. It does have large windows all round and the front door does have a mozzie net that zips round.

No pockets are present on the outside of the bedroom pod to use in the living space for bits. I did think this was a little mean as these really can help in a tent. The zips are just that, zips with no pullcord zipper attachments which make it easier to use the zips.

We are only short (5'6') so plenty of headroom in living area and reasonable amount in the bedroom. There are two large vents running around the sides of the tent and we never encountered any condensation.

The finish on the stitching of seams etc seems good with little evidence of poor finishing.

We did have several of the guy lines come with knots in them which was a touch odd and had us laughing. We figured it must have been a noob doing that job. Easy to pitch with 3 colour coded tent pole sections in the main frame with another small section for the rain porch. I always use diamond pegs so never have use for the ones that come with the tent.

The outer porch that extends over the door can only be seen as an aid to stop water ingress from around the door as you would never gain shade or rain protection underneath it.

We both like the tent and enjoy it's smaller footprint to the Nevada MP.

Pros:

Good full height 3 man tent

Well made

Flat fronted giving more usable room.

Cons:

No pockets in inner tent

Only one door

No cords on zips to aid usage
