2 Reviews of the Salinas L Front Awning

By: Gedhart  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2011   Rating:

AS the previous reviewer has stated, it's certainly a very substantial awning, and really suits longer stays. We only take the awning on trips longer than 4 nights, due to the space it takes up. We use it on an Oakland XL 2011 tent. This was because in 2011, an awning wasn't available for the Oakland. It's not a perfect fit, but fits adequately for our needs.

We've used the front awning in pretty bad weather conditions in Wales this week, and it's remained dry and secure.

Unlike the previous reviewer, we find it a bit of a struggle to pitch (may be due to my 5'2' height). But once up, it's solid and stable. I also like the fact that there are zip-up windows, unlike our Oaky XL, which are on toggles.

Overall, a quality piece of kit.

The Front Awning for the Salinas is quite expensive (£216 from LPC Tents) but having used it I have to say it is worth every penny.

I have used front & side extensions on tents before but when it's windy they just keep you (well. My wife) awake at night flapping about. This awning is a substantial piece of kit. It is big and the metal poles make it very heavy but when pitched it is as solid as a rock and when pitched correctly there is nothing to flap about. Because of its size, with the tent and poles you will need a good sized boot or better still a trailer.

It is simple to pitch but it does take two people. The Bathtub ground sheet is a great idea as we used the awning as our kitchen area so just undoing a couple of small zips on the ground sheet allowed us to sweep it clean each day in just a few minutes.

When in place it does cover a couple of the windows of the tent but as it has large windows itself it doesn't stop any light getting into the tent

The entire front section can be unzipped and rolled up so when the weather's good you have a sheltered area to sit in and watch the world go by.

We've only used it for 1 weekend but we had some appalling weather and this awning took everything the British summer could throw at it with no dramas.

It just about doubles the living space of the Salinas (which is quite considerable on it's own) and makes it a very comfortable home-from-home.

If there is a down side it is that I struggled to get it folded properly and get it back in the bag - but I think that's a bit of knit-picking on my part because with a bit of practice I'll sort that issue.

I would highly recommend this awning to anyone who has a Salinas L, the awning transforms it to an extremely versatile unit.
