5 Reviews of the Salinas L
By: Loopsylala Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2011 Rating:
As a first tent and first time camping family, we purchased this brand new last year and tried it out one weekend in September. We were a family of 3 at the time and having never pitched a tent, we recorded the youtube clip and basically followed this. Well. It has top be said, we found that we could pitch then tent in about 20 mins and then hubby set about re pegging. I was very impressed with the fact we managed.
We found it more than adequate for space for us, although having camped again with 4, I would prefer to have a covered extention and the carpet to allow for cooking and storage outwith the living area and the carpet would be better than re arranging rugs all day long. Love the zipper curtains and storage pockets running down the middle of the bedrooms. Would have liked more options to hang lights from roof, but that might just be my inexperience of camping as there is only the one central ceiling hang point that I can find. Tent was also easy to put away, again watching you tube, and fitted straight back in to the bag every time first time.
Our first weekend last September turned out be be particularly windy, but the tent stood firm although we did get woken up about 3am due to the wind. Fabulous purchase that I hope continues to serve us well, looking for the carpet is an issue as now discontinued.

This is an update to my first review done in July '11.
We have since used the Salinas L in some pretty poor weather. The last bank holiday in August we headed for North Norfolk. We arrived at the site on Friday afternoon about 20-minutes before the rain and we got the tent up and were just Filling it with stuff when the rain came on with a vengeance and it stayed all night. The fact that this was only the second time we'd pitched this tent and we got the main body (and footprint) up in under 20 minutes shows just how easy this tent it to erect.
Next morning many people had their beds and bedding hanging over fences and cars etc to dry it out. We'd slept like babies and the tent didn't let in a drop. It was pretty much the same the next night. So much so in fact that several tents broke camp and went home a day early. Again the Salinas didn't let us down. So I'm hoping that BOBWILDERS (below) issues with his tent leaking isn't an inherent one and that the replacement he gets performs better.
I'd also bought the Front Awning for this trip and it really compliments this tent perfectly. Because of the rain when we arrived on site on the Friday we didn't get the awning pitched until the Saturday morning but WOW what a difference it made - just about doubles the living space. I'd recommend it to anyone with a Salinas - see my review in the awning section.
I do have to agree about the plastic pegs though as even in wet soft ground, the second you hit a stone with these pegs they just disintegrate. I had the same problem last year with our Outwell Carolina.
Because of the peg issue I still can't give the Salinas a 10 but with the awning it is far more versatile than the Montanna and by far the best tent I've ever had.
I really do like this tent and can't see us changing it for some time to come.

The Salinas is potentially an excellent tent and a good alternative to the Montana. It has the same materials and performance as the Montana and so the choice is simply down to the preference of the design and size. I personally chose the Salinas because it looks more modern than the Montana thanks to the omission of the ugly, boxed, side extension and the new fibre glass pole design for the front arch.
The previous two reviewers have said everything that needs to be said about how good the tent is, but I wanted to add a comment regarding two negative issues. Firstly, the new plastic pegs are absolutely useless. This is the same for all ranges of Outwell tents made this year. Having spoken to many people who have bought an Outwell tent this year they have all said that the pegs are extremely weak and bend after the first attempt at hitting them in the ground. You will need to buy metal ones to replace them.
The second point is that my tent has leaked badly. There has clearly been a fault in the manufacture of the tent and so the rain resistance of the material meant it cannot withstand a period of prolonged rain. Again, I have heard similar reports from other Outwell tent owners (not just Salinas). Possibly Outwell have let their standards drop slightly in their manufacturing. Outwell are brilliant at replacing faulty goods, but it is worth remembering that on all their tents there is a 1years guarantee. I would suggest that with any new tent you buy you should leave it out in the rain for a prolonged period of time within its first year just in case you experience the same problems as me.

I bought one of these for £216 delivered( thanks to horsepills) and arrived in 2 days.Took it away weekend 5th aug, weather was nice one min and awful the next and the Salinas stood the weather every bit as well as my Vermont xl, we all stayed warm and dry!
The tent is very easy to erect with 2 people, about 15 mins and a further 10 to guy out on my own. Its a great size for a family of 4 and the living space offered by this tent is very good considering the time to erect it!
It seems a well thought out tent and the head height is also great, as others have said about the easy pegging system, its a bit of a gimmick as the pegs are very easily bent/broken and the they are no use, the metal corner pegs are heavy duty type though.
All in all its a very good tent and mine was only let down by a small hole in the back left hand corner of the groundsheet and a dubious looking patch in the middle of the living area of the groundsheet where upon further inspection on the underside of the sheet it looked as though it has been retro fixed as there was strips of ground sheet glued to the underside,
I have e mailed Outwells online store about this and am awaiting an outcome,so the tent gets 9/10 but loses 2points due to the faults and poor customer service

I bought the Salinas L on-line for £350 including carriage. I had been looking to buy an Outwell Montana 6 but when this Salinas came up at this price I snapped it up.
This is the 3rd Outwell tent I've owned in 3-years. Each one has got progressively better and the Salinas is superb. It is rated as a 5 man and at a push you could probably get 2 adults & 3 kids in it. We however only use it for 2 adults.
Although the only time we have used it so far the weather was positively balmy so it hasn't been tested weather-wise. However the steel poles and Outwell Wind Stabliser System just instills confidence that this tent (as with all the other Outwell tents I've owned) will stand up to anything the British weather can throw at it.
The tent was extremely easy for 2 of us to put up even though my wife had a bad back. Even though the poles are very heavy I think on a calm day I could get the tent pitched on my own in about 30-40 minutes. First time out of the bag it took 2 of us about 30 minutes - including footprint.
The quality of this tent is 1st class. All the zips, seams, guy lines, poles etc. Were exactly as they should be. The different pegs (Outwell Easy Pegging System) for different positions on the tent seems a bit 'gimmicky' and more of a marketing ploy than useful enhancement. That said the metal pegs for each corner is a good idea.
The zipped window curtains are a great idea. My last Outwell tent - Carolina 3, had similar windows but took ages to sort in the morning because they had to be rolled back and tied in position. With the zipped curtains in the Salinas the same job takes seconds.
There's a real 'roomy' feel to this tent. The large windows, Outwell Extended Frame System and huge amount of headroom all contribute to this.
As well as the storage pockets in the bedrooms, the pockets on the outside of the bedrooms are a real bonus - very useful.
Both the large front & side doors have a mesh option for maximum ventilation in warm weather but keeps the flies & bugs at bay. Something we found very useful and were thankful for.
The only real issue I have with this tent is the slope on the front door makes it difficult for anyone under 6ft to open from the outside. A little picky on my part I know as I have already praised the height of the tent.
I will buy the Front Awning for this tent for it's next outing and it will then be bigger than the Montana 6 and more versatile.
All-in-all a superb tent and the only reason I haven't given it a 10 is that I haven't tried it out in adverse weather conditions.
