2 Reviews of the Tomcat LP Smart Air

We've had this tent over 3 years. It is massive in the bag and very heavy, so think about how much space you need for everything else in your car or trailer before you buy one. This said, it goes up like a dream. I've done it myself - as one person - in the rain - with two kids running around not being very helpful. Yes, we have been through two pumps, the top blew off the original one! The bedrooms are big enough for two single campbeds next to each other and length ways, my 6'5' husband just about fits with the door zipped up. I would say you could only fit six if the bedrooms were unzipped to become one on rollmats on the floor. The living area is spacious and we got the carpet for it too, which was a brilliant buy and really adds warmth on colder days. We are summer campers as a family so it's not been over used, but in 3 years, nothing has torn, ripped or leaked and only one peg has broken. This is despite my children's best efforts! All in all a great family tent.

My wife and I used to go camping before we had kids, however our old tent just wouldn't have coped with our lively 2 years old and 4 year old.
We liked the idea of an inflatable tent and have always been a fan of Outwell so a tent from the Smart Air range was the obvious choice. We did consider the Hornet L but liked the shade/canopy on the 2015 model Tomcat. We also considered the Tomcat MP but felt that the living area was just a little on the small side. Spending a decent whack on a tent, you want to be sure that you will not outgrow it any time soon. The Tomcat LP is a good size for a family of four (or even five). However I strongly recommend having a look at it in the bag before you buy. Make sure you are happy with the weight (I can only just lift it) and also make sure that it will fit into your car. As convenient as inflatable tents are, they are heavier and bulkier than their poled equivalent.
We have the 2015 model which has the shade/canopy; this feature is not on the 2014 model. However it does not have the storm canopy on the side entrance seen on the 2014 model. Not a big problem for us - I think the phrase is 'fair weather campers'!
As you would expect from Outwell, the quality of the tent is very good and it's simple and quick to put up.
So far the tent has had one outing and it will soon have its second. Since the first outing I have invested in an electric pump (I'm lazy and I like gadgets). Also, the Outwell hand pump supplied with the tent is rather poor quality. There's lots of resistance pumping, even without the tent connected and on the first outing it (briefly) fell apart. Apparently the Vango pumps are much better if you want a replacement hand pump.
So overall, a very good tent. It would be excellent if the pump wasn't quite so naff.
