1 Reviews of the Tomcat MP & LP Awning
By: CrystalCamper Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2015 Rating:
This tent is the second Tomcat MP tent I've owned. The first one I bought last year and after erecting it for the first time, early this summer, I noticed that there was a small rip in the window material. The 2014 version also had a leak near the side door after a somewhat mild rainstorm. This is something that should not have happened to a tent with reputed 5000 HH protection. After contacting the online store (Casey's) I purchased it from, I was offered an immediate replacement with a 2015 version, which arrived two days after I made contact. Fantastic customer service from Casey's, I must say!
The 2015 version of the Tomcat arrived and I immediately put it up to check for any defects, of which there appeared to be none.
The design of this tent allows a lot of flexibility for 3 to 4 people, but I believe that even though it's advertised as a 5-person tent that you would struggle to accommodate five people in it, especially if you use a camp bed or an inflatable mattress. It suits me and my partner just fine with plenty of room to spare. In a few weeks a friend will join us and we'll have to put it to the 3 person test.
Outwell tents are known for being robust and aside from the 2014 model of the Tomcat, which was made in a different factory, most owners of an Outwell tent are happy with them. In the first real outing of the replacement tent there was a HUGE storm and I am happy to say that the tent was stable, leakproof and the awning was still standing the morning after!
The pros of the Tomcat MP 2015:
-very easy to erect (5 to 10 minutes tops, after the initial time)
-robust and well constructed, quality materials
-flexible living space inside with zip out and zip up walls
-dual side zips for electrical cable, overhead velcro electrical tidies
-awning included (new feature for 2015 model)
-lightly-tinted windows for extra privacy
-ample ventilation/no condensation problems
-simple to deflate and easily fits into its bag
Tomcat MP cons:
-heavy (the tubes that hold the air are far heavier than fiberglass poles)
-expensive unless you plan to use it for the next five to ten years, then it becomes a very cheap investment.
-requires 1.5 x 4 feet of floor space to keep it stored flat, this is a surprising amount of space in a city flat!
-would need a good-sized garden to air it out if you deflated it and packed it during wet weather.
I would have given this tent ten out of ten, except for the weight of it, which I understand is necessary for the inflatable pole construction. Weighing in at about 25kg, this tent is only suitable for car camping - be prepared to give up your backseat unless you have a large boot!
Overall, I rate this tent a 9 out of 10 for its quality, the ease of putting it up, the rapidness of the exchange with the defective 2014 model, the addition of the awning as standard on the 2015 model, and the comfort and roominess of the tent. I would buy another Outwell tent in future.
