4 Reviews of the Toronto 400

We are quite new to camping and having borrowed a small tent last year to go to France I decided that crawling in and out of a small tent wasn't my idea of fun so bought this one from Argos (Autumn 2011) in the sale which made it a bargain at about £120. We have just returned from a two week trip to France where we used it for the first time and I have to say we thought it was excellent. It is easy enough to put up (even for unseasoned campers such as us, though if you're struggling there is a short instruction video from Argos on Youtube). The only bit that was fiddly were the two front poles that have their locating pins on the same rings at either side . Every time we got one in, the one on the other side jumped out. I'm sure it will get easier with practice!

Bedroom/Sleeping: In my opinion it would be quite cramped for 4 people, even 3 to be honest, though technically it is a 4 person tent - perhaps a mix of adults and children might be ok? The sleeping area, if unzipped to make one room, is big enough for a double inflatable mattress with enough room down either side for bags and to get changed/dressed. I doubt you would get a double in one side. You should just be aware that if you have a one-piece double mattress you may struggle with the raised part of the unzipped dividing curtain and end up straining the inner tent. Our double mattress is made up of two singles which zip together leaving a gap at each end so it conveniently sits over the raised part at each end.

Living area: Plenty big enough for a decent size table and a couple of camping chairs if need be and there's plenty of light with the all curtains rolled back. There are about 10 decent size net pockets on the front of the inner tent which are really useful for lightweight bits and bobs. I wouldn't put too much weight in them or they will pull the inner tent out of shape and the zips won't close properly.

Construction: Seemed very solid and good quality. The sewn in groundsheet was great and certainly kept out the weather on the couple of nights of heavy rain - and kept out creepy crawlies of the non-flying kind. There is a small zip at the front to allow you to push your electric hook-up through which is a great idea. It is tall enough to stand up in (my partner is 6ft2 and the top of his head just touched the roof of the living area).

I bought a footprint and a carpet for the living area (I couldn't find any accessories originally until a nice chap at a camping shop told us it is basically identical to an Easycamp Boston 400). The footprint is a bit of extra protection for the base and helps give an idea of what room you need at first for pitching and the carpet makes using the living space far more comfortable.

I only have a couple of minor complaints . There isn't enough ventilation really. It can get a little stuffy in muggy weather, at night especially. If the outer door could have a flysheet perhaps instead of/in addition to its plastic window that would help. If you wanted to sit inside because of mozzys in hot weather it would be way too hot to zip the door up. The other is that the canopy is a little bit small. To be fair you can just about avoid a light drizzle if you sit right outside the door but it would be great if it were just a shade wider.

I would heartily recommend this tent, either for two people or one adult with one to two small children. A couple with small children will be OK as long as air beds aren't required and everyone is happy to be a bit cosy.

(There are more reviews on the Easycamp Boston 400 on UKCampsite if you want more opinions as it is almost exactly the same)

Excellent tent! bedrooms housed our double air beds fine. 2 newbie campers put this up in 30 minutes. Fantastic little flap at the front for the EHU. Only niggle is that the door does not have fly trap, its either fully open or fully shut. We brought this tent at a third of the retail price from Argos.

Bought this tent from Argos at the amazing price of £159. Very easy to put up plenty of room especially for me and the wife. And on the whole well made except one of the pole clips came off the second time we put it up. Argos changed the tent no questions asked and the replacement has been fine. All in all a very good medium sized tent for an excellent price.

This is our 3rd tent that we have all our tents have been brilliant but this has to top them all. It is so easy to put up it stays dry inside when putting up in the rain. A good size tent for a 4 man I am 6ft and can stand up in it all over. The sewn in ground sheet keeps it dry and no wind creeping in so nice and warm and vents keep fresh air in so all in all I would highly recommend this tent to anyone .So happy camping to any one who buys one .
