We own two tents, a Hawaii Reef & a Vermont XP. Whilst the Hawaii Reef IS great quality, poly cotton, superb finishing & detail etc I just love our Vermont! For a family of 5 plus dog it takes us all no problem. We have camped for over two weeks in it & when set up right is like a home from home. The number of doors, bedrooms, windows (that open completely), the porch arrangement etc ensure it can be tweaked to suit any circumstance.

It has all the functionality and quality you'd expect from Outwell it's just on a cavernous scale. It can put it up single handedly if need be, though is easier with two! It holds firm in strong winds, though we do find rainwater can pool across the middle of the roof sections due to their expanse. This is easily dispersed by a prod from below though, and probably more to do with me being lazy tightening guy ropes tbh! All in all this is a great family tent & I will be scouring t'internet for another when we wear this one out!

Fantastic tent, first time we used this tent was at Easter in Anglesey 3 years ago and we haven't looked back since. Great design and holds up in all weather from rain to high winds. The carpets make a big difference and allows plenty of room from the family to play when the weather isn't too good outside. We happily camp for two weeks or more with this tent due to its size and versatility. The biggest plus side is although this is a big tent it only takes two of you to put this up and with a bit of practice we have now got this down to 15 mins.

I had this tent for a short time, the only reason I got rid was the pure size of it, I found it to be hard to put up when you only have kids to help and the pack size was huge but I must say great if you have another adult to help. The other issue with the size of the tent is some small campsites won't allow this size tent onto their pitches, the big commercial campsites are usually ok

Bought this last month as a 'used twice' second-hander, with carpet and footprint, and have just returned from our first time out with it. Wow! The set up works so well for us as a family (2 adults, 2 kids aged 12 and 8). We had the middle bedroom, and had the kids on either side. The space in the kids rooms was amazing-plenty of room for them and their belongings.

The living space is fab, loads of room for 2 tables together and 4 camping chairs, and still space to walk round. The wardrobe is amazing- we set up our camping cupboards in there at the front, stored all the empty bags behind, and hung all the coats from the rail- all the usual clutter suddenly has somewhere to go!

The porch is huge, such a fab space! We have 2 kitchen units, and set them up in one corner in an L shape, and there is still tons of space to just 'be' in there.

Theres no difficulty pitching or striking, as long as you have an idea of how a tent goes up.

We had sunshine this weekend, so cant state how it handles in bad weather, but will come back and leave another review once we know.

The only reason it doesn't get a 10 is the lack of mesh on the front door, allowing midges etc to find their way in, and also, an extra loop allowing the middle door to be hooked back 1/4 way would be good.You don't always want half of it open. Easy to sort that myself though.

All in all, a great, spacious family tent. Cant wait til August to take her out for a week!

We love this tent. As others have said, it is extremely spacious and holds up very well in wet weather. The flexibility of the tent is great with access through the 2 sides and also the front canopy that can be raised in hot weather. The wardrobe are is very useful for a toilet and storage of shoes. The only downside is the front entrance in wet weather, although you do forget that the front is a porch as you tend to treat it as a main part of the tent, so good is the quality! Easy to pitch and always very popular on every site we have attended.

Large tent, lots of space for everyone and all the kit but does not stand up well to extreme weather. Trouble with leaks within the first three years and ground sheet wear. Inner tent (sleeping area) starting to pull away at the seams (a problem remedied by the mesh in the 2012 model)and the front never pegs out so the fly sheet is taunt. Unlike other Outwell models the front bucket groundsheet does not zip in and the air freely circulates under the tent, the front door opens at a slant and this makes it difficult in the wet weather to avoid rain entering the front of the tent and the side doors open into the carpeted area (which you need otherwise it feels like one giant crisp packet!).

Unlike the polycotton tents this tent is quite noisy and moves a lot in the wind. It does dry quickly and is easy to erect and put away. One thing I really miss is a straight wall on which to place a camp stove (that can't be knocked from the inside of the tent), and we might have preferred a central door to the second section of the tent to allow for more storage space on both sides.

The best tent we have ever had its got loads of room and for a big tent its easy to put up me and my wife manage it on our own we love that the front all lifts up for when its hot and the fact that there is pleanty ventilator over all this tent is worth every penny This tent comes into it's own in wet weather and we've spent a few wet days, perfectly dry with plenty of room for entertaining the children. While other campers were having to bale out their tents we were feeling quite smug in our Outwell.

After several camping trips with the family in a cheap buy from eBay I thought we would splash out and enjoy our trips in a bit of luxury. After lots of research we opted for the Outwell Vermont xlp 2012 . Ended up with a great deal from yeomen for the tent, carpet and footprint. Decided to try and put it up with the wife this weekend and was very pleased at how easy it was to erect , as with many people I watched the you tube video and found the best way was to fit the rear arch and pull it up, then fit the front arch and peg that up then fit the middle poles and pull it all out if you get what I'm on about. Took 1/2 hour to get all up and roughly pegged out and to my amazement after reading lots of stories about getting it back in the bag or not as it seams with many it went in at the first attempt (just) . All in all I'm very happy with the size and quality of this tent and can't wait to get away in the near future.

We bought this tent at the end of 2011 and have now used it for 2 weekends. We bought this as was similar in size and style to our old tent ( kampa Filey 6) but with the bonus of an extra bedroom so our children can have their own space.

We don't have any complaints about this tent, it's spacious and cosy with the carpet added, the wardrobe is great for keeping the tent tidy.

It takes around 30 mins for 2 of us to put the tent up and then the OH completes the pegging while I organise the inside.

As mentioned in other posts it does take a bit to get it back into the bag!

The Outwell Vermont XL is perfect for our family of four. We upgraded from a Coleman Salt Lake which was good but with limited living space.

The Vermont XL has all the space we need without having to worry about complicated extension sections. We camp about 5 times a year and one of the trips is always a two week camping holiday in France so we've tested this tent in all weathers. It stood up to torrential rain in France when all other tents flooded and keeps out the cold in the unpredictable English weather. The purchase of the carpet was money well spent when camping in April! The tent is just so robust, the seams are well taped and in strong winds it doesn't move around very much.

The footprint is an excellent design feature and means that you don't need to spend time drying the bottom groundsheet when striking.

The wardrobe is a great design feature and hides all the bags/clothes etc keeping the main living area tidy.

There is a separate groundsheet for the front section of the tent but to be honest we never use this as we're more than happy to have the front bit with grass and it's an ideal porch which can be used for cooking in poor weather.

The reason this tent doesn't get 10 out of 10 is due to a couple of minor points that could be improved:

1) the electric points are only on one side of the tent and it's not the side that is optimal for us. It would be better to have the electric points on the same side as the wardrobe and the opposite side to the entrance so as not to trip over the cables. We get round this by poking the cables through the side door but Zip points on both sides would have been a better design.

2) It is very tricky to put up and down. We are good a putting up tents but this is a heavy tent and you have to manoeuvre the poles carefully when erecting which is a difficult job for two. I personally couldn't do this tent on my own. Also getting it into the bag isn't the easiest of jobs.

All in all we love the Vermont XL and are planning on holidaying in it for many years to come.

Manufacturer's Description

The Vermont XL has been discontinued, and replaced for 2012 with the Vermont XLP - there are 2 fundamental changes in the new XLP - the first is that the windows are now all tinted which will have the effect of minimising the glare from the sun but also of improving privacy. The second is that the front of the tent has been re-designed to incorporate a Panoramic Room - a large fully enclosed front porch area with a 4-zip multi-door opening which allows you to open up the entire front of the tent converting the room from an enclosed porch to a sun room .
