5 Reviews of the OzTent RV-5

By: Discoverystu  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2020   Rating:

As most have said you need roof rack really. The RV5 is deeper than the others which is handy for camp beds . Its single skin so good ventilation is a must. PLenty of expensive optional extras. Can be draughty and I wouldnt use one out of summer. It is fab to pitch though and I find easier if 2 of you really. Good tent but def more for the touring / 4x4 brigade

Good tent, easy to pitch and dark inside! Is a bit big when transported- you need a roof rack or trailer really, the tent is well made and has done us well, it zips to the awning we have on the Land Rover which together give a huge amount of space, you can buy extra sides and front which nearly double the size of the tent. This extra space is very handy if you are stopping any length of time in one place, it leaves the main tent just for sleeping and storing any stuff etc. It says it will sleep 5 but they would all have to be thin! We use it for two only. We went for the RV5 because of our awning. You need to make sure the vents are open if you do not use the fly sheet because you can get some condensation inside ( like all single skin tents I think), always a head turner when we pull up and pitch up- just is so quick really. All round a good tent for us.

We were very fortunate that we were able to buy our RV3 complete with all panels, poles etc for £500,it had only been used once by previous owner, we had seen this tent on a trip to Morocco and were very impressed with the speed of erection and my partner at 6'3' could stand up easily in it, also we were needing to upgrade to a bigger tent as we were intending to do a lot more travelling. There is a downside with the weight, but the living space is great, with all the panels up we have managed to fit 6 in the tent for a meal out of the rain. Recently we have had a problem with a leak from the seam above the bed compartment zip and one of the horizontal poles in windy weather collapses, we have contacted BOAB and OZTENT but neither have even had the courtesy to reply, we have met other Ozten owners with similar problems and on there advice have used a waterproof sealant for the seam.

I would still recommend the tent and on the whole love it.

I raved about this tent when I first got it time can change one's mind. I purchased an extension for it called a deluxe screening room cost £175 all would be still fantastic except the first time I used it a seam on the main tent were the extension attaches ripped. I returned it to the UK importer BOAB Ltd but despite showing the photo evidence that I had pitched it all correctly they STILL insisted I was somehow responsible and would not accept there must have been a fault with the tent seam and so refused to repair or replace it despite the tent being sold with a 2 year FULL warranty. So much as in principle this is a great tent it’s clear that the importer is not.

I have an RV-4 which is basically the same as the RV-5.

Can it really be pitched in 30sec's YES once out the bag to having it standing on its own 30 sec's is easy even on your own. However I normally time the pitching of a tent from unloading it to getting last peg in. In that case 2 min would be no problem. It’s so quick I even take it on day trips.

The tent is made of very good quality and heavy duty material and all other parts are of a high standard so should give many years service. It has a number of nice features there are 2 vents above the door and under the porch so we have not had any condensation problems despite it being a single skin tent. It has a small zip opening for electric hook up cable to pass through. The best is the large back window get this facing the view and its really great to lie in bed and just look out.

The tent has a number of optional extras including zip on side walls for porch so making the tent much bigger a zip on fly sheet. Caravan attachment and you can zip 2 tents together.

So what’s the down side it doesn’t pack away small so you will need a roof rack and at 22kg it is heavy. Then there is the price it is a lot of money as tents go and is probably too expensive if you just pitch a tent and stay in one place for a week or 2 but I like to tour so have to pitch and unpitch nearly every day and after a lot of research this tent is perfect for the job and I would strongly recommend it.
