9 Reviews of the Harstaad 8 XXL
By: Andy Redmond Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2009 Rating:
This is our first tent it is very spacious and could easily sleep 12 people it takes us about 50 mins to put up including all bedrooms and guy ropes
It is approximately 7 meters by 7.5 meters corner to corners
Waterproof we had a thunder storm and it was fine no leaks or anything.
You can easily get a double airbed in each bedroom and the centre pod is huge

I bought this last year for £20 off eBay. And it was worth every penny. Big roomy internal size but really does need two adults to put up in roughly 40 minutes once you know what you're doing. Internal bedrooms are really only big enough for one person though and they are not the strongest in the world - several now have bust seams. Withstood A LOT of rain during a storm a few weeks ago with just some minor water pooling in the central area underneath a roof seam. Only one small hanging storage caddy. One of the big plus points though about this tent is the very small bag size once packed. A compression strap makes the footprint even smaller. If I had paid £100 for this tent, I would have considered that a fair price. If you are looking for high end luxury, it will disappoint. Don't overpay and you will be fine!

Bought one off eBay (£80 delivered) as a first tent. Bit of a PITA to put up (we never got it up in under an hour) but a great intro. Lasted us several years.
Plus points: Roomy and waterproof. Bedrooms OK if only used by one person, I'd suggest a bit tight for two.
Negative points: As mentioned a bit of a struggle to put up but manageable by two sensible adults - but you won't set any speed records.
Modifications: I glued plastic tubing over the ends of the pole pins to mke them fatter to stop the poles slipping off, which worked a treat but may have contributed to poles breaking. We had about 4 of the thinner poles break and perhaps two of the larger ones - but always in very high wind situations. Fairly cheap to replace though.
I also used some CLINGONS (brilliant kit) to hold the stormflaps out from the tent to stop waterleakage into the pod areas, which worked great. I used 3mm bungee cord attached to the CLINGONS and then on to a peg to keep the tension in.
I've now moved on to a tent from a bigger name company which is miles better, but cost almost 5 x as much. If it lasts as long as the Haarstadt and gives us as much pleasure I'll be happy. You generally get what you pay for. The Haarstadt was great, we used it when it bucketed down and in near gale force winds and it was great. It had it's drawbacks, but if you want luxury tents you need to pay luxury prices.
This was a great tent for the price and we still keep it - just in case. If I do decide to sell I'll probably break it up & get 1/2 my money back selling off the poles/pegs and groundsheet on eBay
Worth the money, great as an intro to camping (once you understand that it is not as good as as the more expensive Vangos/Hi Gear etc!). If you just want to give it a go - buy one!

I love this tent used it loads of times its never leaked at all and we have been in really bad weather with it. Its so easy to put up loads of space in it. You can easily fit a double blow up bed in each bedroom and there is still the dome bit for more people if you wanted. We use one bedroom to store all the stuff. The space in the dome is amazing even my boyfriend who is 6,5 can walk around in it without bending down which is great. We are just home today after 3 days away in it and our friends dropped in to see us so we had 6 adults and 4 teenagers in it, plus our tables and chairs, and there was still plenty room to move about. I think this tent was a great buy and we will have a lot more camping trips in it. The tent also fit straight back in the bag every time.

Brought second hand from a family that did not get on with it- similar reason as other reviewers. Used as a leaders tent for scouts and a short break with my son. Bedrooms very disappointing-- looking at options to hang the pods better- but living space was great- plenty of room and great head height- moves a lot in the wind but leaks weren't a problem

Poor tent. Bought off ebay for half price, (allegedly however as everyone else seems to have the same shopping experience I wonder if any ever sell for more).
It leaked terribly, the bedrooms sagged and allowed water to run under and soak everything in them.
We took photos and had a refund.
Bought an Outwell Montanna 6,( 10 out of 10 rating from me),and never looked back. My advice is avoid the Harstaad 8 like the plague.

Another purchase through ebay, you get what you pay for, on first sight this tent has loads of room, four bedrooms, one for each kid, one for me and my husband and one for storage. However at the mention of rain this tent is a disaster, the bedrooms are small and sag terribly, so much so that any water will run straight onto the bedroom ground sheet and onto your mattress and sleeping bag, not good a four in the morning. A few puddles in the central living area after rain, but they can be mopped up. My advice is to buy a better quality tent, that way you won't be put off camping for life.

We bought this tent from eBay for less than £100 (like previous reviewer) with another family. The idea being that it would fit all 8 of us, but easy enough for 2 adults to erect alone (with small children on hand to cause havoc!) We've not been disappointed yet, having had 2 successful trips, one with both families, and then just one family.
The instructions are useless, but its not complicated, just apply common sense and lay out flat first to line poles up. Wouldn't fancy doing it with only 2 adults if there is a strong wind. Would prob need to rope in other campers to assist!
The central area is great, and if you don't need all 4 sleeping pods, you can leave them out which gives more space for storeage or eating inside. We've slept with one child and one adult per pod, with double airbeds inside which fit perfectly and help to keep the sides taught. Would be very cosy with 2 adults in a pod. But thats personal choice!
Great for beginners and families, and a bargain if you can buy for around £100.

I Bought this tent off e bay for about half of the rrp. I was worried having read some of the poor reviews about this make but was pleasantly surprised on receiving it. The instructions are not worth the paper written on so you have to use your common but it is not difficult even for a novice like me. Very roomy in the living quarters but would struggle to get 2 adults in one of the bedrooms. All in all a value for money tent that is OK for the summer months but would not like to risk any other season as not for the die hards. This is a budget tent ideal for weekends away.
