3 Reviews of the Narvik 5 DLX
By: TheWildBunch Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2007 Rating:
Bought this via ebay and as it was cheap, fairly waterproof, had a bathtub groundsheet in the main living and looked sturdy.
On its first summer outing it took an hour to put up. I am well versed in pitching tents (20+ years experience) so this was a long job for me. But with care, and another to assist, you can get it up without breaking the poles, as long as the poles are all built correctly. Unfortunately, my tunnel exit pole was too long and in my haste I bust it and ripped the canvas tube, just when it was about all finished. So I made a fix with some B&Q metal gluing together the hacksawed broken section and a bit of sewing fixed the tear. When it was all up it was great. Not a leak. Very spacious. Inner tent kept the night flies out, whilst we enjoyed the cool air and a few drinks. Standing room in the inner living area. Only a window tie was missing.
By the next outing (2008), I stitched a window tie on, made a new tunnel-end pole and took an emergency pole making kit. Just as well, as 2 more glass poles broke as we put it up. It was still very water proof and we had a great time in it. As we stuck camp another of the original glass poles broke and ripped its fabric tube.
For our last outing in it (2009) I replaced all but 1 glass pole with new (unbreakable) sections, repaired the rip and again took a pole making kit. This time everything went up without a hitch. Only the fly sheet seams started to creak as the fly sheet went on. This time the tent leaked, but not at the seams, on the fabric itself. But the tent (big end into it) did survive a force 7 gusting 8 squall that destroyed/blew away many other tents, even caravan awnings went. We woke up (7:30am) from an unbroken night's sleep to discover people sleeping in their cars and some campers gone due to their night being wrecked, even more were putting it all back together. Neighboring campers were amazed our tent had NO problems at all. By the holiday end the outer door zip had broken apart, it had corroded to bits, even though the tent is stored in our dry attic.
Pros:
Robust, waterpoof, spacious, a 6'6' person can stand upright in centre area. Fly proof netting in main tent. Great tunnel exit & canopy and 2 side exits. Survives storm level winds if pitched correctly and pegged with 9' deep guide pegs.
Cons:
Its NOT for an impatient beginner. I suspect the poles are poor quality. Watch out for poor manufacture (e.G. Overly long poles and poor tent fabric assembly). Might not be waterproof for longer than 3 years. Expect zips to last 3 years only. Seams may also have only a limited life (4 years ??). Fairly heavy. Not for touring - stay put holidaying only.
Having decided to tour, we got a new tent for 2010 because the Narvik was heavy weight and troublesome pitching.

We purchased ours on e-bay (£45.00) Bargain price but as in previous review poor quality and design of inner tent. When erected the poles place too much tension on the corners of the inner tent and have ripped in several places. Used in severe weather (bad rain and high winds) and performed really well, a couple of minor drips but nothing else. The fibre glass rods for the front porch seem to have to bend too far and 3 have already split. Already looking for replacement. ! Thinking about Vango Amazon 600.

Buyer beware. We are in a (RAGE) since we bought this tent. We have emailed the seller, for our money back well that was a waste of time as we have been unable to contact them as they never reply. The inner tent ripped in two places when we first erected it. The fly outer is too short and sits about a foot off the ground all the way around. The whole construction of the tent is very poor.
