1 Reviews of the Prospector Shack

By: Jrtonks  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2017   Rating:

The Robens Prospector Shack's interior size belies its small footprint. Due to the vertical sidewalls and ample height, the Shack feels spacious inside and has an element of luxury and old style camping about it. I absolutely love mine and have all the extras (see below), but I only tend to use it for camps of 3+ nights due to the faff of transporting, building and drying it out afterwards. I've used it in some of the worst weather imaginable and it's stood up to it all.

The Good:

Decent interior space with plenty of headroom.

Very stable even in heavy wind and the canvas keeps water out more efficiently than you might imagine it would.

Cool in the summer and low condensation thanks to the canvas flysheet and numerous vents.

The Bad:

It's a pig to put up and takes at least two people. The poles go inside the canvas and there's no easy way to do it. Robens actually abandoned the original Prospector design because of the volume of customers returning damaged poles. If you take it carefully and use common sense, you'll get the hang of it quickly enough.

The zip out base for the wood stove lets water into the tent through the zip if water pools under the base.

It doesn't come with an inner or porch. You'll have to buy those separately and they're not cheap.

There are a lot of guy ropes and kids seem to have a fixation with tripping over them.

It's too small for a family that likes to take lots of stuff camping with them. One adult and two kids or two adults can get cosy and comfortable in the half-inner and that's it. When I used mine with several adults we just didn't take the inner.

Advice from 5 years of ownership:

Always use a very heavy duty groundsheet under the tent to prevent stones from damaging the base, and be sure to tuck it right under the tent so rain cannot run down the sides, onto the groundsheet and pool between the tent and its base (see previous comment about the zip).

There are no horizontal poles supporting the sides. You can buy extendable awning poles that clip onto the corner poles and I recommend doing so as they make the tent sturdier and reduce dependence on the side guy ropes in heavy wind.

Buy a thick tent carpet or heavy duty rug to protect the groundsheet from chair legs and camp bed feet, etc.

Having the inner is nice if you camp in the winter.

Having the tarp (porch) is also useful and a great place to keep chairs and wet boots out of the main tent. You can also barbecue under it in the rain!
