3 Reviews of the Valley Lodge
By: Db195 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2009 Rating:
I wanted a good quality tent with more than one entrance, somewhere where I could sit in the shade and still get air circulation. On my last trip I had nearly 'poached' myself in the unrelenting Cornish sunshine (yes, really!) because my previous tent meant that I was either inside being boiled or outside being fried!
After much research I opted for the Valley Lodge, although it was 'on the limit' really weight-wise for a motorcycling pensioner who travelled alone.
Nevertheless, I bought one from Simply Hike and set off for a long trip to Woodhall Spa to try it out. Once on site I set about pitching as usual in a gentle Lincolnshire breeze and I soon found out that the Valley Lodge was a 'step too far' for an old bloke like me! I had to resort to enlisting help to erect it as I just couldn't manage it on my own. Those hugely long poles had to be threaded through the sleeves and I needed help to hold the tent up whilst I struggled to get the scissor-like pins into the bottoms of the poles. Once erected though, the quality shone through - apart from the groundsheet being a 'clip-on' affair rather than a zip-in one, thus letting in draughts (and some multi-legged visitors) - it was an excellent tent and pretty much what I wanted.
Sadly, though it wasn't much good to me if I couldn't erect it solo, so I contacted Simply Hike who, after liaising with the Robens/Outwell parent company, refunded the cost of the tent plus the carriage charge I incurred in returning it. Top marks to all concerned!

This was an excellent starter tent. Not cheap, admittedly, but with great weather proofing (5000HH) which meant that it was possible to discover whether we really liked camping, for itself, regardless of the elements. Cheap tents wont cope with serious British weather and getting wet is no way to fairly gauge the pleasures of the outdoor life.
After several uses the Valley Lodge proved itself an excellent starter tent. On it's first week long outing to Devon it was subjected to 24 hours of such nightmarish, continuous and torrential rain we were the only tent left on site the following morning when the storm had passed. We remained warm and dry, and so did all our equipment. It has proved itself a sterling buy and is only let down by it's lack of refinement. With a fully sown in bedroom area it is a little disconcerting to have an open living area accessed, as ours has been, by hedgehogs, mice and all other insect life. It also lacks head space. Although high enough to stand in the centre of the tent, as you move outwards the curvature of the dome makes stooping essential or walking on your knees likewise. We have now upgraded to the more expensive and luxurious Vango Airbeam range, but recommend this highly as an excellent quality starter tent for a serious camper(s).

After our well loved Outwell Arizona finally gave up we wanted to find another tent with similar features. We decided against another Arizona as they had changed it. This tent was the only one, of this size, with 3 doors, standing room, a fully meshed bedroom door and not a sewn in ground sheet. As Robens are Outwell they had taken the Arizona and improved it. A slightly bigger bedroom, light aluminium poles, a bucket groundsheet and a zip in the bedroom compartment that allows access to the vent in the fly sheet from inside the bedroom. It is still lightweight and not too big. We love it. Easy to erect and take down for two people and even though it is slightly expensive it is well worth it. We did manage to get it for £270 which seems to be less than it is on sale for now. We would strongly recommend this tent for two people. Can't wait for the summer!
