Ive decided to go camping again after a 20 year absence and thought my 4 man dome tent (only used 6 times) needed replacing. Theres nothing wrong with it, except I had seen a new fandangled design, the tunnel tent with headroom!.

An extensive look on ebay and gumtree to get ideas and prices set me on the way.

I cut my choices down to a couple, and read a few reviews and decided on a brand new Skandika Gotland 6 from ebay.

Ive used it twice so far, and cant believe what a fantastic tent it is. For its first outing I set it up in 30 mins for the outer shell. I must admit this was done without instructions, (as I had left them at home) and also with my 4 year old boy 'helping'. The tent was so easy to erect and its cavernous inside. The bedroom pod splits in two rooms and again, so easy to put up.

I didnt get electric so couldnt use my heater, which wasnt an issue and there wasnt any condensation in the morning. It was sunny on the Saturday, but poured down on the Sunday morning. Due to the curve of the roof, the sidedoors arnt really useable as the rain just pours in when its unzipped, this is the fault with all tunnel tents without a side canopy. This got me back onto ebay and I ordered the extension awning for the front. Packing away in the pouring rain only took 10 mins and I was quite pleased as I managed to roll/fold it into its huge carry bag with ease. My 4 year old was too busy messing about with my phone in the car to help me.

A problem then presented itself, how on earth do I dry it? A week later I took it to a quiet play field and unrolled it and stood, back to the wind and wafted it around like a gigantic handheld flag. Thats the outside dry, how do I do the inside?

I went with my boy again at the weekend, again my boy 'helped' and I had it up within 20 mins on my own but took longer to try and get the groundsheet flat. The Groundsheet is sown in, and is quite high, approx 7' which kept tripping up the boy child, to my amusement.

He did have his uses as I gave him towel to dry the inside. I can hire him out if required.

I tried to connect the electric and found a slight problem, there are two plug/cable zipped openings, one either side. But the zip is only 2' wide so I couldnt push my plug through, Il put a thin waterproof connector on my lead to solve this.

I had the excuse to add the awning, just because, and I was very pleased with it. Was my kitchen and a nice place to sit when it got darker. Again it was very easy to erect on my own. Boy child had found the play area to be bothered to help.

All in all, I am very pleased with this 'budget' tunnel tent, its massive inside, easy to erect and packs away nicely.

You could buy better, but not at this price.

Very spacious tent. We are 2 adult and 2 Kids aged 7 & 5 and with a large double table, 4 chairs, Camp Kitchen there was still plenty of room inside to spead out on the floor and for the kids to play games without getting anyhere near the cooking.

The inner tent is equally large and can be either divided in two or opened up into one large room, With two double airbeds there was still ample room alongside each bed for luggage and toys.

Two handy pockets on each end of the inner tent for bits and bobs and also two on the inside for more valuable items for when your tucked up for the night.

Plenty of ventilation with the two front side windows being all mesh and the rear two windows being part mech and part clear plastic although it would be better if they would swap these over so you could have the clear plastic in the living area. The window covers are zipped so can be partially opened but if fully opened those of limited stature may struggle to reach the toggles to secure the flap as it curves away from you. I'm 6 foot and had to reach fully to get at them.

We forgot to take any heating with us on our April trip and did have condensation on the roof in the morning due very chilly nights but with electic hook up and something like an oil radiator this shouldnt be a problem. At no point did this condensation drip nor was the inner tent damp so it wasnt an issue, just a point of note.

The tent arrived boxed and wrapped in polythene and comes with a very large tent bag with draw string and webbing clips and two large webbing handles that can fit over the shoulder. Separate bags for the Poles and Pegs and a good number of pegs were included more than enough to pitch and a good few left over incase you bend any.

No pitching instructions came with ours but if you know the principle of pitching tunnel tents then its not a problem and the Gotland 6 goes up very quickly once you have threaded the poles into their slots.

It comes with a sown in ground sheet and be aware this comes up quite high on the entrances at least 6 inches which managed to trip our two sprogs a couple of times but once they had got used to stepping over the threshold there were no further trips.

Two electric cable entry points one either side of the tent which are both zipped and covered by a flap.

All three doors have fly screen mesh as does both doors on the inner tent so no problems with insect entry if you have an aversion to flying critters.

Very very pleased with our purchase and give it a 9 out of 10 only for the reason of the windows that could be better if swapped around

Was a little worried when I read the previous review but I am pleased to report that despite wind and rain on our 3 night break the tent performed marvellously well. The bedroom area sleeps 6 easily and the lounge area is truly massive. We were piched bum to the wind so had no trouble with the tent bowing but the flaps on the vents did flap badly making enough noise to wake the dead. I was disappointed that we could not open the flaps over the side windows, they are only net and could benefit from a clear plastic window cover which would allow them to be opened even when raining. It would make such a difference. The roof vent problem no longer exists the manufacturers must have changed the design and the entry points for EHU seem adequate for a standard connector.

Just back from a week's camping holiday in North Devon � I say a week, but we survived just 4 days! This was the second time we had used the tent, which had stood up well to a poor week's weather in Dorset last Autumn.

Although we would have liked to have pitched the tent bedroom-on to the prevailing wind (thus presenting minimum wind resistance) we were restricted by the site rules to pitching it sideways-on. Apart from some water seepage through the doors and windows that faced the wind, there were no no real problems for the first few days. However, the last night we were there the wind must have picked up to 40-50 mph, causing the tent to seriously bow down. It finally gave up the ghost by collapsing altogether at 4:25 am. We retreated to our vehicle (which I was using as a windbreak, along with two other regular windbreaks!) to await a lull in the weather so that we could dump everything into the vehicle and retreat home. Needless to say it was pelting down with rain throughout the ordeal.

The tent itself seems to be none the worse for the experience, but I found that one of the pole sections had split along its entire length.

Good Points

. Truly cavernous! If the doors were slightly larger I could maybe get my vehicle inside.

. Good build quality.

. Main tent fabric is damn near waterproof. (As should be expected for a 5m water column rating.)

. Quick & easy to erect.

Bad Points/Room for Improvement

. Roof vent and the bottoms of windows let in wind blown rain.

. The doors have no side protection, hence rain gets blown inside the tent whenever the door is used. Could do with some (detachable?) zipped side skirts.

. The entry points for an electric hook up are only about 2cm diameter � how can one get a standard connector through without having to disconnect and then reconnecting the socket?

. The side guys are positioned approximately a third of the way up the poles which allows significant bowing and twisting in high winds. Provision of some high level anchor points on the middle poles would, I am sure, allow a vast improvement in stability.

. Wind buffeting causes wind facing doors and windows to rub against the insect screens, thus allowing water to penetrate the fabric.

P.S I solved the roof vent problem by attaching two plastic gripper clips to each side and stringing them to the conveniently placed loops on the outside of the tent. These loops enable the side doors to be be secured when they are rolled up, and needless to say, the doors can not now be rolled up unless the clips are removed! The clips are sold as Clingons, Power Clips, Sealeys et al.
