3 Reviews of the Lyon

We (2adults, 2kids (6&3),1 big dog), bought this tent cheap off ebay(cca 130£) as our 'test' tent. We didnt have the option to borrow a decent size tent for our first camping, so we decided to buy the cheapest decent looking one, big enough for us and with integrated floor. This one looked perfect. And for our weekend in sunny weather it was great. Small, yet spacious enough for all of us. The divider for bedroom is just a flimsy piece of fabric, but we don't need it anyway. It has mosquito nets on both entries, awesome! On the back it has two windows, so it is really well ventilated. It is a very light in colour, so nights can be pretty bright if there is a lamppost nearby (as it was on our test night in the garden) It was quickly up and also down. I just hate it, that it has sleeves for poles from one end to other. It is much more practical if you only have a short lenghth of the sleeve and then clip on the rest of the poles to the tent. But the reason for only 7/10 is the leak we got when we left it in our garden during a rainy night. It was not condensation-the tent was empty. There were small puddles of water in all the corners and under the window. I contacted the manufacturer/seller and they sent me a small tube of seam sealer. I plan to waterproof it next season, hopefully with fabsil or something similar (if I manage to get it-no supplier where I'm from). On the bright side, we only intend to use it for short stays, when there will be no rain. For that purpose it is perfect.

I would recommend this tent in spite of leaks as I think this can be repaired and you just can not beat the price on this one!

We decided that we wanted to take the kids camping at the end of August so bought this tent off ebay brand new for £130. We were a little dubious at first with it being so cheap and theought if its no good then we haven't really lost that much and its done us a weekend away with the kids. This says its a 5 man tent but with air beds I would say really 4 at a push. We had a double airbed in the larger bedroom, one single airbed in the second bedroom and the other single airbed in the main part of the tent. Our son slept in the main part of the tent with the dog and he was warm enough and was just fine. Our children and 12 & 13 so too old to be sleeping in the same room as each other, but would be fine for younger children.

This tend did us just fine as we had a Coleman events tent also so that we had somewhere to sit and cook our food also, but if you don't have anywhere else I would say that this can get a little cramped if more than say 3 people. We had a real down pour on our third night - torrential rain most of the night but the tent was fine and we had no leaks. This is a great little tent and hopefully we will have many more weekends away camping in it next year.

We got this tent last year for around £150 from the internet and used it for my husbands first forays into camping. Its a 5 berth tent but we use it for the 2 of us with a large air bed in the 3 bedroom portion and a loo and changing area in the 2 bed. The lounge is a good space and we had 4 of us in the lounge area on one camp (although a little cramped with the kitchen as well).

The first time we used it was a weekend in the Lakes where is rained solidly for 2 days and the tent held up well with no real leaks. We have put velcro along the bottom of the back window vents to keep these stuck down.

The front porch can be a little annoying in the wind as it blows down a lot.

By the time we camped the 3rd time in the tent last year we had bought the Skandika Gotland 4 extension (they don't do one for the Lyon - see pic above) and added velcro to the front pole of the tent and it gave us a much bigger porch area which we could put the kitchen into (due to the sloping front of the tent, addition space was only around 1m but useful) - the extension fits well.

There are also no carpets or footprints for this tent but you can buy other brands and makes and adapt easily - I have a Witchita 500 tent carpet which is only 10 cm different and a footprint for Hi-Gear Mojave.

Manufacturer's Description

The LYON is a compact tunnel style tent for families and groups of up to 5 people. It is nice and simple to assemble and at the same time strong and sturdy, giving good weather protection. The light colours, the mosquito mesh on all the windows and entrances and the breathable tent material all contribute to the light and airy feeling and positive indoor climate of this attractive tent. The sleeping cabin is at the back of the tent and has a divider which can be used to create two smaller sleeping areas, as required. The side entrance has a neat porch roof to protect it from the weather and the main entrance at the front can serve as a sun shade canopy by using the two steel upright poles provided. The main living area provides plenty of space for all your camping accessories and luggage and can also be used as extra sleeping space for guests - thanks to the sewn-in groundsheet the whole tent is well protected against draughts and damp. The water column value of a tent gives information about the quality and strength of its waterproofness. A tent is considered suitably waterproof at 1200 mm. The LYON has a water column of 3000 mm and provides very good protection from the weather. Look after your tent, so that this remains so! The LYON poles are made of shatterproof fibreglass and are extremely sturdy and yet also flexible: a very welcome combination. The robust workmanship of the tent with tear resistant material, taped seams and reinforced eyelets and tabs make the LYON a good investment. Included are a handy carrying bag with assembly instructions, all necessary accessories (guy ropes, tent pegs etc.) and also a repair kit - accidents do happen!
