4 Reviews of the Gorge 4

By: Benardern  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2012   Rating:

The price is good for the size and look of the tent, but you are paying for quality or lack of. We bought the tent, extension and a wind shield, all Sprayway and all have had problems. The quality of the poles is poor and weak. The seams also don't hold up well. The products had limited quality checks before being shipped - broken pole and others that wouldn't fit.

To top it off the wind shield buckled under the power of the wind!

If you are looking for a cheap family tent to use on good summer weekends then it's worth purchasing. If you want something that is going to last you years, then keep looking.

Bought this tent in April 2012 after combing the internet for a dome tent that would be standing height as hubby is 6ft. Believe it's a 2010 model. Also purchased the footprint at same time, which turned out to be a good investment, gave extra protection under foot and also kept bottom of tent clean.

First tried the tent in May 2012 for 2 nights away in Paignton. What a tent! Excellent quality for the money. We couldn’t find many reviews to help us decide, but are so glad to report we have not been disappointed. It is a great looking tent; we didn’t feel out of place while sat among more expensive tents on the site. It is huge, for us 2 anyway and we’re not small by any means! More than tall enough for hubby in living and sleeping area. It does need 2 people to put up, and on our first attempt it took approx 1 and ½ hours to complete. However we feel confident we could get it done next time in an hour max. It is easy enough once you’ve done it once. It was easy to take down (in dry conditions) as well and all fitted back in its bag without too much effort.

It has a large sleeping area big enough for a double airbed and you still had room to walk around and dress etc. There is a small storage area that you can section off within the sleeping pod, but we just made use of all the extra room to make it feel more spacious. There are some handy storage pockets in the sleeping area for keys, phone etc. There is a large vent behind the sleeping area which helps control the temperature and airflow. We were able to hang a lantern from the top of the sleeping pod.

Not sure it would fit 4 adults, but probably 3 with appropriate sleeping mats and bags etc. The living area is large enough for 2 chairs and a small table plus your general camping equipment. It has 2 small vents near the main door. It has a large front door and a smaller side door, so great access. The doors have drawbridge style bottoms, so can be let down flat or raised to prevent bugs and water getting in. Found it a bit tricky to get these tight enough, but sure we will suss out on our next outing. Had some tensioning issues, but think it may have been because pitch was on a slight slope. As with most tents though while raining and getting in and out of the tent water can drip down into the tent right by the door so a canopy would help, or a mat just to contain the drippers etc. The living area also has some handy storage pockets and we were able to hang a second light.

We experienced moderate rainfall and winds during the night, but glad to report no leaks or issues. However there was a build up of condensation in the living area of tent that did lead to one or two drippers falling on carpet. This is to be expected with such a high HH, so I have been told. The sleeping area was completely free of condensation though. After we aired the tent for a few hours during the morning the condensation cleared quickly. The bottom of each door is only secured with one centre toggle, so they can flap around in high winds; ideally some Velcro would have prevented this, but didn’t cause us any real problems, just a bit drafty. Mesh doors would also have been very useful, but not essential. There are loads of guy ropes to help keep the tent stable, and we felt very safe and secure during the unpredicatable weather in the night.

We think it’s a great tent for the price and are very pleased and hope to use it frequently.

We bought this tent after viewing it at our local camping shop and we weren't disappointed with our purchase.

We were looking for something in this size range but something that had just one bedroom. We had considered a Vango but didn't like the split bedroom aspect as we knew one section of the tent just wouldn't get used.

We chose this tent based mainly on the size but also that we have used other Sprayway products and find them a dependable brand.

It took us an hour to put it up on the first attempt but I reckon the next time we go we will easily cut this down to no more than half an hour. The poles are all colour coded and the tent itself has colour coded corresponding holes for the poles to pass through. This was a pretty helpful feature. It is a two man job putting it up though but this isn't an issue for us.

The porch/living space is huge and has some storage pockets and a hook to hang a light.

The doors and windows are well positioned however it is slightly annoying that the front door doesn't zip across the bottom as this leaves quite a large gap between the base of the door and the ground which was big enough for our Boxer dog to escape out of a couple of times and also let a bit of draft in.

Overall this is a fantastic tent and is very well constructed. It stood up well to a night of rain and an incredibly windy night! We are very pleased with this tent and would highly recommend it.

I've been looking for a while to change my tent to have a larger living area with increased headroom but with only one bedroom. We saw the Gorge 4 at a local camping shop and it met all the needs we were looking for. We also purchased the additional under groundsheet and carpet

The tent was easy and quick to erect although getting the tensioning right to use the zip on the side door was a bit of a problem. The front door was okay. It seems to be well made and good value for money. It was also impressive that there were no leaks when we had torrential rain one night apart from using the door. We will be getting the porch extension to stop this happening next time.
