3 Reviews of the Magnum 9 XP

By: Castlehillers  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2007   Rating:

Prior to the Sunncamp Magnum we had previously used a Wild Country Quasar 4-season mountain tent for two-person lightweight camping and were used to very high performance in terms of resistance to wind and rain. We were thus initially sceptical of the potential capabilities of this type of much larger, and on the face of it, lower specification tent. However, to date we have been massively impressed with its performance.

After a few outings it now takes us (2 people) an hour to put the tent up, including the many guy ropes. The sewn in groundsheet is excellent, there are no worries of creepy-crawlies or drafts. The two bedrooms easily accommodate a large inflatable double mattress and the central area is huge, ideal for a family of 2 adults and maybe up to 3 children. There are many well-thought out features such as side windows, 'sun roof' window, multiple storage pockets, attached groundsheet for porch and porch sun canopy.

In terms of negatives, I agree with another person who said that the fly sheet doesn't come down close enough to the ground. During a torrential thunder storm the wet wind was blowing under the fly sheet and through the bedroom window. It is a pity that the manufacturer didn't put a zipped cover over the bedroom windows. This would have solved the problem, and also increased the tent's suitability for colder weather. However, it was notable that no rain leaked directly into the tent during this exceptional rainstorm.

We bought our tent in an end-of-season sale at a discounted price and feel that we have already had excellent value and look forward to many more enjoyable camping trips in it.

Excellent size, but the outer doesn't seem to reach the ground so you get a terrible draft and makes it cold at night

This is a fantastic tent. We used it for two seasons, it stood up to some bad weather(rain & wind) and then decided to buy a tourist 600 with three bedrooms. But after 2 outings in the tourist 600, we decided to go back to our magnum xp. Can't wait for some dryer weather to get back out in it again.
