8 Reviews of the Pathfinder 400

By: Nigel-1962  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2011   Rating:

We brought the Pathfinder 400 after looking at a lot of tents,we required a single pod with enough room to stand up in and for our 2 dogs to sprawl out (we have a Greyhound and a Cavallier king charles spaniel). We found it easy to pitch, light, airy and warm the only issue we have with it, is the door zip. We found it sticks at times when trying to do it up, but we soon figured out how to get around this little problem, otherwise we have no issues with the tent at all as it was everything we required from a tent.

I recently decided to go back to camping, having last done so over 40 years ago. I needed a roomy tent that I could stand up in (I'm 6 ft 2') and it would be used by just my wife and I.

Having looked at the tent reviews on this website, we plumped for a bargain brand new Sunncamp Pathfinder 400 which we purchased directly from the manufacturer for £90.00 (as it's a discontinued model). Having just returned from a very pleasant 3 night break in Cambridge, I have to say that we are very impressed with this tent as it satisfied all of our requirements. It's easy to erect and take down, it is roomy and light, it's warm at night (admittedly we enjoyed mild weather) and coped admirably with a heavy downpour during our second night.

There is a large vent/window on each side of the tent and one at the rear which provide ample ventilation which is a bonus during muggy evenings but no doubt an unwelcome feature when the weather is cold and windy. Having said that, we are fair weather campers who only anticipate using this tent during the summer for long weekends and the occasional midweek break and this should hopefully not present us with any issues on that score. The build quality of this tent is first class and I would thoroughly recommend it. Just bear in mind what a previous reviewer said and ensure that you use a decent sleeping bag if you tend to feel the cold at night.

Bought this as was advised it would be perfect for my needs! not too sure it is?.

Good points, its large enough for 2 adults and a 5 year old, the carpet is fabulous!, love the shape -though not very practical, the height is great and I can still put it up on my own, only being 5'2'! - though it is easier with 2!, inbuilt ground sheets, really stable in wind and rain, good open feel with good sized windows and front opening.

Bad points, fabric is flimsy and feels at risk of tearing, because of the shape the bedrooms arent comfortably 4 or really even 3 birth if using airbeds, room divider flimsy fastens at top and bottom but not at ground level - not that private.

Last but maybe the most important, it is SUCH A COLD TENT! We are seasoned campers, in canvas, but nearly froze in this tent to the point that I will be contacting the manufacturers for vent covers! The tent is single skin on the front and may as well be on the bedroom roof for all the ventilation on it!

If you get this tent get really good sleeping bags! its such a shame as I do really like this tent, I will use it until I get a suitable canvas tent, but only in hot weather!

This is the second year I have been using this tent and I really like it overall. I wanted a tent I could stand up in (I am 6ft2), wasn't too heavy, packed away easily enough and had a large living area. Also it needed to be airy in hotter weather.

We use this just for 2 so space is not an issue for us! We have a double air matress and loads of room for our stuff in the bedroom.

The living area has loads of space, we get a large camping table and two camping chairs with loads of room to spare. There is a zipper to feed electric through too. There are several pockets in the front of the tent for storage.

I like that there are large windows with flyscreens in so you can really open up the tent to get some air flow through easily.

It is pretty good value for money, I bought it for £200 from Outdoor Megastore. I also bought the carpet which is fantastic.

The bad bits : It's not the easiest tent to put up, I did manage to do it by myself once but its a bit of a chore. It isn't too stable and you must tie off all the poles correctly when the outer sheet goes over so the ropes keep it stable . That said once that's done it's fine, we've used it in fairly heavy winds without issue. The biggest complaint is the front door zip, you cannot zip it up without pulling the side in, not a huge thing to do but a bit of a pain and I can see the zip breaking in the future.

Still give it 8/10 though

I went for this tent because it ticked all the right boxs, the SIG was a big plus for me and my family. I have a 5 year old and a large-ish dog. The first time I put it up it took me about 20 minutes, the living space is just right for us and we can get a double airbed and a single in the sleeping area with room to move about. It comes with a detachable divider for the bedroom but we don't use it at the moment. The tent is double skinned all the way around it so its also nice and warm and the built in organiser is a big bonus to, its amazing what you can fit in that organiser.

This is a great tent for our needs,

We will be using it for a weeks holiday in August, and several weekends.

I had one of these for my birthday 2009 after pestering my reluctant camper hubby. Being a relative novice camper, I trotted along to Towsure for advice and having stipulated I wanted a roomy tent for 4, that I could erect with minimal help, the salesperson sold me this. What a disaster! We struggled to erect this and nearly succeeded in ripping it in the process. It's a really odd shape and in even light winds, becomes a large tent shaped kite!

The sleeping area is a pain, because it narrows meaning you can't get 2 campbeds and 2 air matts in together so hubby slept in other section (and froze!)

I got it in July, camped in August, sold it in September. I now have an Outwell Indiana and hope for better luck this year. I am buying a Vango Icarus 500 for short trips with the kids, as it looks a doddle to put up.

Wish me luck

Got dizzy looking for a tent to tick all the boxes, two adults plus dog, plenty of space in both living and sleeping areas, sig, light easy to erect, etc, etc, etc. Very easy to erect after once or twice and dismantling simple, great sized bag for carriage. SIG always a plus for me but would benefit from a drop down at the doorway. All in all really pleased and proud of my Sunncamp Pathfinder.

Bought this one due to sewn in ground sheet and a bedroom which can be divided into 2 rooms. Chosen specifically as we have a 20 month old who plays on the floor so sewn in ground sheet essential. The bedroom is large enough for us all to sleep together but can be divided as she gets older but can still reach us without having to unzip her compartment (peace of mind for all!) So far seems excellent. A smaller door for the outside may have been useful.
Great standing room for hubby (6' 1') and all three can quite happily sit in the room area without being on top of each other. No complaints! Not had another tent for comparison but suits us perfectly.
