4 Reviews of the Stratus 8

For me, this tent has everything I need.

I found it surprising simple to erect for a large tent, inserting the first long pole whilst flat and then raising with guy lines and securing, then adding the second pole and so on. Just two long and two short poles, for all the space and strength of a tunnel tent but with half the aggro (my last one had six arched poles).

The tent also has an even distribution of space with the option to have 4 good singles or 2 large double bedroom areas that face each other across a living area. It is 8 man but realistically, better for 4-6 persons to be comfortable, as is often the case.

There are also numerous wardrobe pockets built in and a few hanging points for lanterns, radios and the like.

The ground sheet in the central area is not stitched in but I have heard of people doing this, being one improvement that can be made.

The option of a porch on either side is great for the windier days but I particularly like the skylight in the centre of the living area, allowing in natural light and giving extra ventilation on warmer days.

The tents 2m height suits me (6ft tall) but its equally good at 1.8m in the bedroom areas, where I normally have to crawl around in most tents.

Overall, I really like the tent but my wife still wants more space and a sewn in ground sheet, so it looks like I am going to have to part with it soon :-(

I borrowed my sisters stratus 8 last year as we were new to camping and wanted to try it out before buying our own. This tent is really roomy but, the groundsheet provided only covered the living area which meant you had to have both the pods up. This tent could really benefit from having a SIG as then you wouldn't have to have both pods up and have a bigger living area.

We didn't have any rain while away but, it was quite windy and this tent didn't move. The tent comes with king poles so you can make a porch of the doors which was really handy to keep either the sun or rain off us.

It has a central hanging point for a torch or lantern but, could benefit from a few more and maybe some storage pockets which this tent hasn't got.

I found this tent extremely difficult to erect when I first bought it. The instructions (in overseas English) were not very good at all and it took another camper to fill me in on the bits that weren't there! Two people are needed to erect the tent - one to hold up the middle and the other to put the small peg-like metal bits into the holes at the end of the poles. Now we are used to it we can erect it quite quickly. The design is excellent for us - theoretically it sleeps eight but in practice it is comfortable for four, two at each end of the tent. The height of the living space in the middle means that you can stand up in comfort. We do find, however, that after each pitching a lot of tiny specks of the blue waterproofing material come off, which means that now the tent is not as waterproof as it used to be. We have also had a pole snap in high winds. Overall, though, we are very fond of our SunnCamp Stratus 8! (The year of manufacture is approximate.)

I currently own one of these, my 4th year so far and I wouldn't swap it far the world, its withstood very strong winds, big storms and sounds great too when pummelled with hail.

The design is very well thought of for our needs (2 adults, 2 children) as the sleeping pods are both in opposite sides of the tent and as they are both double rooms we only have the need to put just one up as this frees up an amazing amount of space, the pods them selves are very spacious allowing a double airbed in each one, note though the 'rooms' are not sealed allowing access to the entire pod, but as our children are young this is a benefit more then a hindrance in our case.

The erection consists of four poles, two forming the main ridge, whilst the other two give the sides the strength and when tied together makes it a tough tent to blow over due to the shape.

Seen and tested other tents but after what this has been through and kept us dry, Ill stick with this.
