4 Reviews of the Super Quasar

By: Gazrow  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2022   Rating:

This tent is not discontinued.

An upgraded version, the Super Quasar Expedition has been released with a stronger flysheet.

It continues to be my favourite tent. I'm on my third and it's new.

I've discovered that it has a massive following in the serious walking world and the military, people who spend time in the mountains and have no time for social media.

I've owned two of these over the past 10 years. Replaced the first for a Hilleberg Nammatj 3, which suited me much less and I sold it to buy a second new Super Quasar.

My intended use was motorcycle camping in support of landscape photography. The motorcycle has since gone, but the tent is still a favourite of mine.

It's very easy to erect in any weather conditions providing you peg tent and fly sheet to the ground when it's windy. I have chased a tent across a field which taught me a lesson. In calm conditions you hardly need to fit many pegs for an overnight stop.

It's an erect inner first tent, but the yellow interior is waterproof to a high degree and rain will not enter into the sleeping area during the assembly process.

I've mainly used this tent for solo use for which it's plenty spacious and it's not tight with two people. Three residents only in an emergency, I suggest.

I love the interior, it's bright and spacious. I'm just over 6 feet tall and use two joined Thermarest mats which more, or less, covers the floor and consequently I'm always insulated from the cold floor and never have to fight to get back on the mat. The ends don't taper, like the Hilleberg, so I can use the space any way I want. The extra height of the Super Quasar allows full height whilst kneeling.

The 4 pockets are well placed and useful for storing keys, wallet, specs, radio, etc. The sky hooks are well suited to hanging torches and I use a Candle Lantern which warms the tent up from freezing to throwing off the sleeping bag in 5 minutes, or less. I feel cosy, comfortable and secure in this tent. It hardly moves in strong winds and it's nowhere near as noisy as the Hilleberg. That tent frequently kept me awake.

The two vestibules are really handy and I've kept my motorcycle gear, boots, helmet, jacket, boots etc at one end and used the other for access and cooking. I admit to finding the doors a little small for the latter purpose, but I'm a big lad and old enough for my flexibility to have disappeared.

The doors always confuse me. How much to drop the zips to provide adequate ventilation without encouraging the rain to fall in when using the insect netting only on the door, or part opened zip I'm also never keen to trample on the door when lowered, which others do without apparent concern. I peg one side of the door as a wind deflector when cooking, which is good, but could be better if the other zip could be completely detached.

Packed, I can get all tent gear, double mat, sleeping bag and cooking equipment in a 65L North Face bag. It's Grab & Go. The tent also fits easily into a plastic bag if packing up in a downpour.

All in all, I find it to be a great tent for my use. It's almost bomb proof and over specced for most of my use, but I'd rather it be that way round than have any concerns at all about comfort, or security. Tent cost at this level is not a major concern to me as travelling and cheap accommodation is so much fun.

This is a wonderful and practical tent. Owned this for a couple of years and have used it from campsite to the Scottish highlands. Great tent, good size, enough room for 2 with kit or a squeeze with 3. Very easy to erect and collapse. Best expedition tent I've had and I've not managed to break it yet!

A little heavy for its size and sleeping 3 would be a squeeze. Weatherproof and reliable. Very quick to erect inner first. Manufactured in UK. Expensive but can be had much cheaper with a little searching.

Manufacturer's Description

The Terra Nova Super Quasar is quick and easy pitching with colour coded poles, allowing you to set up camp with the minimum of fuss.

3 people can sleep in the Super Quasar and the pole geometry prevents the inner sagging and creates an extremely aerodynamic profile, which sheds wind and snow with ease. Two porches allow gear to be stored out of the way and still allow easy access. The Super Quasar offers excellent durability, waterproofing and UV resistance - provided by the Watershed Endurance and Waterbloc fabrics.

Used extensively as both a basecamp tent and a mobile expedition tent, you can be confident the Terra Nova Super Quasar will withstand the harshest mountain conditions.
