6 Reviews of the Voyager

Terra Nova Voyager

I was surprised to see such poor review results on the Voyager. I've owned one for the past 26 years and used it on walking, canoeing and motorcycle tripsin Scotland and mainland Europe. It has often taken up to 60/70mls/hr winds. I completed a 6 week motorcycle camping trip in Europe during 2018 without any problems. It is showing signs of ageing now. Despite yearly coatings, the fly sheet is no longer shedding rain like it used to and sealing tape over the stitches is beginning to separate. Still, it makes a good 3 season shelter.

Its like an old pair of boots, I hate to let it go but will have to some day.

My experience with Terra Nova has been awful. Firstly after using my tent for the second time it ripped in moderate wind. I contacted them and sent the tent off for inspection. They replied saying it had been ripped by myself (even though it tore in the middle of the night when I was asleep inside). Due to this I asked them to fix it at my cost and send it back. I sent it inside the tent bag originally and on its return it was not in the bag. I contacted them and they informed me it did not arrive inside the bag. This was my first Terra Nova tent, and I probably could have forgiven them for the tent ripping, but the customer service that has followed has been inexcusable. A massive shame as it is a British product.

I've had my voyager for a good few years now and it has served me excellently, both winter and summer camping. It is sturdy, faces up to very strong winds, is spacious enough for one person and the porch is great for your gear too. I can't see me changing this for any other tent at the moment. I gave it a 9 however as there is one flaw I have discovered. In the snow, the roof is kind of flattish so it gathers. It does gather little pools of water occasionally in heavy rain, but it definitely is too flat and so prone to accumulating snow. I wrote to TN about this and had an email conversation about it, and they gave me some free replacement poles for my trouble! Ha! Anyway, a great tent, well made, easy and quick to put up and strong and durable.

I have had this tent the terra nova voyager for just under a year now mostly took out out in fair weather I decided to camp on top of Pen-y-fan 11/04/15 the wind condition's were moderate to strong at the time's but with this being rated a 4 season tent I was confident it would withstand the weather being thrown at it , but boy was I wrong the arch pole over the door kept being blown back onto the tent and me inside all night despite being pitched correctly the result in the morning was a broken pole and where the red pole sit's over the two blue horizontal poles it had rubbed holes in both pole sleeves and the stitching inside was tearing through the inner tent where the pole sleeves attach, now I cannot insert the poles through the sleeves without them coming through the holes . I contacted terra nova about this they were useless after many emails and pictures of the damage were sent I had to send it off to them, 2 weeks for them to look at it and after they make a dissension another 2-3 weeks for them to repair it at my expense when it is clearly a design fault as there is no reinforcement protection where the poles overlap on the front of the tent but there is protection on the rear. Truly disappointed in there poor customer service I expected more form a British company I have lost faith in there product's and will buy a Hilleberg for a better experience .

I've used this in heavy rain, snow and high winds - it's stood up to the test every time! It's lightweight which has meant I've used it for cycle touring. Really easy to put up and take down on your own.

I've had two people in it before but only when I've had a car to keep my other kit in. It's rather cosy for two, you better be very good friends if you're sharing it!

I am a seasoned lightweight camper and demand a 4 season tent for British weather to ensure the rain stays on the outside. Used in continuous heavy rain for days in Ireland, the Brecon Beacons and recently Usk,it has kept me totally dry. Takes 5 mins for one person to erect with practice. Too small for 2 backpackers. Just about fits me and my motorbike gear. Highly recommended for solo use in the wettest of conditions.

Manufacturer's Description

For over 25 years the Voyager tent has been a long term favourite for backpackers and trekkers. Its semi- geodesic design provides good stability and plenty of space to accommodate 2 people and their kit. The tent is designed for the backpacker or traveller going on medium to long-duration trips and looking for a spacious lightweight kit.

► Rated 4 season trekking, so suitable for year-round backpacking. It’s also a good tent for Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions in more exposed areas

► The semi-geodesic design (the poles cross over at 3 points) and inner first pitching also make the Voyager more stable and quieter than a tunnel tent in windy conditions

► It’s free-standing which makes it ideal for camping where the ground is less firm, as it doesn't rely on guy lines and pegs to support its main structure

► The Voyager is a perfect tent for wild camping as well as campsite use

► DAC NFL colour coded poles make locating the correct pole sleeves and pole feet tapes easy and the tent quick to pitch

► The inner door has a full midge proof mesh panel and the full solid door behind to provide unlimited options for ventilation depending on weather conditions

► Tried and tested Terra Nova fabrics are used to provide lightweight performance and good durability

► The Watershed nylon ripstop flysheet and Waterbloc nylon groundsheet are fully seam sealed to offer complete protection from the elements all year round

► Dyneema reflective guylines add more stability and the Voyager comes with extra guyline attachment points should additional guylines be required. Dyneema guy rope is three times as strong as standard guyrope of the same weight and has very low stretch for stability in all conditions
