6 Reviews of the Urban Escape Akashi 4 Man
By: CrystalCamper Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2013 Rating:
I bought the Akashi 4-man tent, online, from someone who probably bagged a bargain from Halfords at the end of camping season clearance sales. The tent arrived unused and complete with 4 sleeping bags and double air mattresses as part of a bundle.
I found this tent to be more than adequate for my uses when camping with a child at a music festival, and on a separate camping trip with another adult. I was able to put this tent up on my own (trial run in a back garden - 35 minutes). The inside of the tent is quite roomy, having the two bedrooms at opposite ends of the tent. This leaves a good amount of space in the middle to put a table and a carpet (picnic blanket).
Like other reviewers, I think you would struggle to fit four adults comfortably in this tent for anything more than a weekend camping trip. However, it's roomy and comfortable accommodation for three (two adults, one child) and unless you are over six feet tall you will have no trouble with headroom in the middle section of the tent.
There were a few occasions when driving rain created small pools of water ingress from the seams, in particular where the bedrooms were suspended and from where I hung the tent light. I am sure that with added waterproofing that this would not happen - the weather was particularly foul the nights when these breaches occurred. The construction of the tent felt sturdy enough, but you do need to make sure that you take tarps or a footprint with you to help protect the sewn-in ground sheet. If I could redesign this tent, I would have provided at least one of the side doors with a netted door, for some ventilation. As it is currently manufactured either the entrances have to be wide open, half-zipped and flapping, or completely zipped shut.
After not having camped for over a decade, this tent was a good first-step back into camping for me. If anyone wanted to buy a budget, family-sized tent I would definitely recommend this tent. If you look around online you can sometimes get great deals on last season's Halfords tents. I've passed this tent on to a young family who plan on camping this coming summer.

I have just returned from my first ever camping trip after picking up this tent for the bargain price of £50 including 2 double beds and 4 sleeping bags. We chose to replace the beds with self inflating mattresses which gave a bit more room in the bedrooms, although they are large enough to fit a double mattress in each pod. We had 3 nights of rain on and off and some torrential downpours but not a drop of water came in. I can not recommend this highly enough as a start to camping. My wife has even agreed to go again! I am now looking for a canopy or extension so that we can have a separate cooking/storage area.

I am never convinced by a manufacturer's stated size of any tent. This tent is no different in that respect and 4 or even three adults with baggage would find it a bit of a squeeze. I use it for myself however so space is not an issue.
I have used it twice now and have had mixed weather on both occasions with a couple of minor leaks which were sorted by an application of sealant to the offending seams.
The large windows are excellent but when the blinds/curtains are up it gives a feeling of exposure. However with a bit of ingenuity and a piece of duck tape I can now partially raise them to whatever height I wish.
It is easy to erect and usually takes me 20 to 30 minutes to get to the fully pegged stage.
The fully sewn in ground sheet does what it's supposed to although having an insect curtain on the door would be nice when the porch is up. (What do you want for £129.00).
The only other down side to putting the porch up is if it rains (even lightly) there is a bit of water ingress due to the tunnel design, but nothing that can't be sorted with the srategic placement of an old towel.
Packing Up - As easy as putting it up although I am going to invest in a footprint and save on the wiping down time.
Finally a tent that easily goes back into the bag it came out of! What a Joy
All in all a good buy at £129. I think I have found a tent that I can stick with.
Recommended - Definitely.

This is a good looking tent. It has ample room for three adults or two adults and two children. It is our first tent and we managed to erect it in an hour the first time, but around 30 minutes after that. It is also easy to take down. It was good weather when we used it for the first time, so cannot comment on its ability to keep out the rain. There were no drafts in the tent and we had no condensation. We are very pleased with our purchase

This tent was easy to pitch, took us twenty minutes to have everything done, and is warm and dry even in very wet conditions. There is plenty of room for the four of us in the living area and we were able to stand up inside. The bedrooms accommodated two single air beds for our sons with room for their holdalls full of clothes. The double airbed fitted easily into the second bedroom. The zippers are good quality and the ropes and poles are strong enough. We have been camping for several years and have owned four tents, this is by far the best one yet.
Packing away was easy, thanks to the design of the bag provided for this tent.
Will be recommending this model to friends and family who also camp.

Fab, totally watertight family tent.
Easy to put up and spacious.
We had a week of nightime rainstorms and watched other campers flooded out but this little gem held up really well.
Can't really think of any minus points.
Great looking and a good buy for the price.
Stands up well to a four-year old who rolls about and kicks all night.
Looking forward to our next outing with it.
