4 Reviews of the Beta 550XL Alloy

By: Paulharness  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2021   Rating:

In common with most tunnel tents with side doors, rain falls inside the tent along with any pooled water as soon as the door's open. So I recommend buying the tunnel tarp to prevent this.

Used the tent on a very exposed, very windy site and the tent spent most of the night flapping round us. The supplied pegs were pretty useless & bent, so luckily I also had more substantial pegs.

Handy large porch area, but let down by a slope on the front meaning taller people find it difficult to access the shallower areas.

Worst tent I've ever had the misfortune to own.The groundsheet is extremely poor quality the slightest thing puts tears in it crate paper is stronger. Its the weirdest design as well usually these type of tents you hook in your sleeping area then bathtub groundsheet for living area. Nope not this tent the bedroom area is attached to the living area as well this made it ridiculous to set up. Used once then sold it on. Hated it! how the hell this tent has won some scout award for being some amazing overall tent I will never know! Vango ought be ashamed of this junk.

To add to my first review: We have now used this Beta 500 XL Alloy at Countryfile and in the Yorkshire Dales and on the Yorkshire Coast for 15 days. In scorching heat at Blenheim Palace the two doors allowed a welcome breeze to pass through the shady sitting area. In Yorkshire we had a lot of high gusty winds and downpours as well as nice days. The tent moved like a jelly in the winds but kept us 100% safe and dry. I didn't think it would but being well pegged down it behaved perfectly. It has the tunnel tent design problem of rain getting in if you open the door but Vango do sell an Adventure Tarp for £25 which should cure this. Impressively spacious for two + two, the super-zips are better than usual and the heavy duty tent pegs really do the job in wind. The alloy poles take away all fear of that loud crack which means a section has split in the wind or set-up with all the inconvenience of time-consuming repairs you then get. This is not a bad tent, one improvement would be a canopy to do some cooking under cover outside but I haven't found one yet. If you can pay less than £200 you will have a good buy.

This is a vastly improved version over the standard Beta 550XL. It is just as enormously spacious and just as easy to pitch but the alloy poles add a certain and definite welcome stability in wind and take away the fear of the standard fibre-glass poles snapping in set-up or take down, or worse in the wind. The tent pegs are very sturdy and should be offered as standard across the range but they are not. The strengthened zips look and perform well but there is not a lot wrong with the standard zips on this model. Vango advertise this model with a darkened bedroom but in practice it is very difficult to notice any improvement at all. The bedroom is nothing like the blackout on Coleman and Quechua tents which is disappointing if this is important to you. It was as bright in the bedroom before 5am this morning as it was in the sitting area or indeed outside, so I put my eye-mask on and blackout happened! Its a great value tent. We paid £189 from Winfields, a lot less than the RRP and well worth the moderate extra over the standard 550XL. Recommended by us.

Manufacturer's Description

A 3-pole tunnel tent that offers generous sleeping space combined with a large, functional porch area for storing your camping essentials. The AL variation of this tent is reccomended by the Scout Association because of the strong alloy poles, sturdier zips and more durable pegs, making it much more robust and resistant to wear and tear. This feature-packed 5 man tent also includes Vango's patented TBS®II (Tension Band System) to provide additional stability in poor conditions, and all-in-one pitching ensures that the sleeping pod always stays dry if it is raining. The Beta XL is ideal for slightly longer trips and will also appeal to campers seeking a more spacious and comfortable weekend tent
