5 Reviews of the Family Shelter
By: Taafe75 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2017 Rating:
I recently purchased one of the family sehlters after a friend had bought one, I have a Vango Rivendale and the extra sun canopy addition so I have put this overt the sun canopy to increase the size of the canopy/covered area to the front of my tent.
It was a great addition although it had soem teething troubles with it being thre first time I have installed it. I need to work out what pitch/height to have it and the poles at but it is a great addition to the tent. It can be used on most tents, a really usefull bit of kit

We use the shelter to put our trailer in, it has a built in kitchen, and it is just perfect for the job. I have added extra poles which makes it ideal for me as I am 6'1' and now have no need to bend. As previously stated a windbreak would just add to the setup.
The only problem I now have is that it is blue and since buying the new tent (green) it doesn't match so am trying to convince OH to let me buy a green one to match the tent.

We bought one from the lovely large camping shop by the river in Truro whose name for the life of us we can't remember after our Outwell Oakland XL side shelter and then a steel framed pop up gazebo fell victim to the high winds last year. What a fantastic buy, made better by the fact that it was half price!
As others have done we've added extra corner and side poles using old frame tent legs which increase the usable space for tall people like Mr F by quite a lot. There are lots of options to add windbreaks along the sides and ends to increase it's versatility too. We also use ours as a shelter in the garden for family bbq's where it'll quite easily cover ten people sitting around a table. It has become an essential piece of our camping kit!

I`ve recently changed my family set up from big multi-room monstrosity to 2/3 man pup tents and this model as a cooking shelter/communal space.
Firstly the set up worked fantastically, flexible so that we can adjust the rig to fit the group.
Now the Vango Family Shelter: I found it perfectly strong enough to stand up to a really breezy spell, it also kept all the rain/hail out (off), and was a welcome shelter from the sun (we had 4 seasons in 1 week)
I took a 2 metre worktop and two 2 ring camping gaz cookers and there was plenty of space for the 7 of us inside/under it.
Other options were considered but rejected ie gazeebo,(too unstable) Coleman shelter (too big) teepee (too expensive)
I used all the guys and added two extra 6ft awning poles and a 5 pole windbreak, I think with 2 more awning poles this set up would be un-beatable.
Recommended, if your set up required a stand alone sun/rain shelter.

This shelter is a fantastic addition to our camping kit. In very simple terms it creates shade from the sun in good weather and rain when it's wet. The shelter comes with 2x 2.1m king poles and a whole heap of guylines and pegs so you can pitch it as safely or shoddily as you like. There are loops for the guys at the two centre pole eyelets, all four corners and one on each bottom edge. Also, there are a pair of guy loops and pole eyelets along each sloping edge. We used the 1.8m king poles from our tent kit to 'open up' one end of the shelter to aid entry and egress. The pegs in the bag are cheap steel 'V' type, I didn't use them as I don't like them and have a ready stash of decent pegs to use.
The shelter was a real boon on our trip to Brittany this summer. It was shade from the sun, privacy from other campers at night and very effective shelter from torrential rain. It is well made and packed away easily when the time came to strike camp. It's also a good conversation starter as nobody seems able to walk past it without asking where to buy one. All my mates want one too.
