3 Reviews of the Icarus 500 Airbeam

By: Singingbird3  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2012   Rating:

The review of the Icarus 500 by Singingbird above is actually a review on an Airbeam KINETIC 400. I don`t know how I made this model mistake, must have been my OAP brain!

Anyway, the Kinetic Airbeam is still a great little tent. I experienced hail stones in the tent for the first time last month. It was for all the world like being in the middle of a huge New Years Eve fire work on the Thames. Billions of explosions and the tent took it very well, not a mark on it when I checked in the morning. Because of the `A` frame stablizing belts the tent copes really well with squally weather. I see that the newer models now have the valves for pumping the beams up in a higher position on the airbeam now so, no more grovelling about on your knees. Also there are now little pockets to pop the guys into when it is time to pack up and go home. Vango continue to be creative with their ideas.

My model is the same as the 500 it`s just a Vango Icarus 400 which is a little smaller. This tent is the best tent that I have ever owned and, I have had several. Because I am now past my mid 70`s I wanted an easy but robust tent so that, after a long drive, I was not exhausted with pitching. Pop up`s tend to be flimsy and really difficult to unpop. The Airbeam has many really nice features like easy sliding guy rope locks and a little velcro belts for tidying away guys at home time so no fiddling about trying to tie them all up. The tent copes with very squally winds beautifully and does not leak in heavy rain. There is plenty of porch room. Although they say that it sleeps four in the bedroom area, I have always questioned this with all tents. I would find it difficult to sleep in as confined a space as tent makers suggest. Sleeps 3 yes but 2 really really comfortably. The window blinds and cloth door do not need rolling and tieing up as they just bundle up into a tiny pockets (very simple and easy.) So much thought has gone into making this tent easy to use. It really does only take a few mins. To errect the main tent. Then make a cup of tea and peg out the guys. These tents are expensive but, I have never regreted this. It was money well spent.

New out and just purchased with 10% off at Go Outdoors. We bought this to supplement our main tent (Royal Barcelona 6) as a quick pitching unit ideal for short weekends away. Our first real experience with an Airbeam tent. Very impressed with the pitching time at 2 mins from out of the bag. Spacious for a family of 4 for a short break - consider the matching Airbeam extension or cheaper poled Icarus 500 extension for anything longer. Bright and airy but at 5'10 I only just stand up inside. Plenty of useful storage pockets.

Found to be stable in light winds (no doubt will be challenged at some time with our weather). No issues with the heavy rain experienced over the weekend.

Would highly recommend for short duration trips. A little costly but worth it for us to be able to spend more time camping and less setting up and packing away.

Manufacturer's Description

A roomy tent for 5, using inflatable beams instead of poles. Set it up in minutes and your camp is ready!

Vango AirBeam tents use inflatable beams in place of traditional poles, allowing you to pitch a large family tent in a matter of minutes! Pitching time takes only 3 to 10 minutes (depending on the size of the tent) and will be up and ready in 4 easy steps. All you have to do is take the tent out of the bag, pop a peg in each corner, pump up the inflatable beams and peg down a few guylines. It really is that simple!

They''re so quick and easy to pitch that one person can pitch an AirBeam tent within minutes. Whether you’re camping solo or with the kids, an AirBeam tent will make pitching and dismantling a breeze.

The Vango Icarus 500''s combination of space, flexibility and simplicity make it popular with anyone looking for a weekend tent for family camping or festival visits.

The outer is waterproof with taped seams, and the fully sewn-in groundsheet keeps out draughts and creepy crawlies.

The spacious front porch is great for storing gear, furniture, bikes etc, and the large windows give great all-round visibility and let in lots of light. Roll-up curtains allow for privacy when you need it.

The side mesh door allows for insect-free ventilation, and the parallel-zip front door can be extended out as a canopy using awning poles (not included).

Front and rear venting and a breathable inner keep you comfortable inside even on those bright mornings.

The whole tent packs easily into a handled carry-bag for simple transportation, and takes up minimal storage space.
