10 Reviews of the Icarus 500 XL
By: FJay Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2017 Rating:
Easy to pitch&pack away, plenty of space for 3 (would be rather crowded with 5). Pegs flimsy, would recommend buying 'reusable' tough ones. Insects love the colour so good to have nets on both doors. No leaks in moderate rain but (as mentioned in previous reviews) don't open the door while wet or you'll have a nice little puddle inside.

This is our first tent and must say it's not too bad. Has plenty of room for us as a family of 3 and definitely worth getting the extras like awning and carpet. But does have a few downsides, like the external door slopes the wrong way for being opened in the rain allows it to pour into the tent an soaking the interior. Window blind fastener is flimsy and won't last. On the upside was easy to pitch and put away and like the wee things like air vent with mesh on it and opening for hook up.

Great sized tent, especially with the addition of the front canopy (only downside is the 9m length sometimes restricts where you can camp as some sites have size restrictions) The extras such as footprint and carpet are well worth investing in even though it means more to clean and air when you return from your camping trip!
Easy to put up and take down, even managed to fit everything back into the bags!
Comfortably fits 2 double air beds with room at each side to wedge a few bags. Have tried to fit 2 double and 1 single air bed, it was a squeeze and the single air bed ended up on a slant! The extra space in the living area is brilliant especially with 2 young children that need to move around. This is definitely the best tent we've had so far (the first time we've been camping and not had 'tent envy' when we've looked around the site!

I really like this tent. Easy for two of us to get up, and lots of space. If we had a few more people it would sleep up to 7 easily, but then storage would be a problem.
I have the front porch awning too, and it is a lovely area to sit in the evening contemplating the scenery. Also have the carpet which from previous camping trips is a welcome addition.
It is high enough fro my 6'1' husband to stand up in with ease. Hopefully will be off and out for years to come.

Good tent, BUT, the door slopes the wrong way, so that when it rains, you can't use the door without water coming in. Spacious-there are 2 of us, and straightforward to put up. The pockets are handy for keeping the tent tidy. Even has a hole for the mains cable. We are tall and both can stand up in it.

First tent I have owned, chose this one off eBay as it seemed the extra living space might be fun. Love it, really easy to pitch and strike.
Just getting used to camping (after 40+ years) and getting my 12 yr old daughter into it. She loved the extra space. Pity the bedrooms are the old style 2+2 instead of 2+3, the divider being right in the middle, but it does give both bedrooms extra floor space.
I can see the appeal of the Outwell level of fitting and finish, but for the price.Really pleased with it.

Just back from my 2nd 3week break in France and tent was really good. A breeze to pitch and drop. Takes about 15 minutes for 2 people. I would recommend the footprint to enable first time positioning and also the carpet, as makes life very comfortable and tidy. As mentioned before the lack of tent light holder is a bind. Also from last year the both external zips are crappily made and had a tendency to jam and split apart, but with great care they are manageable. Even with very heavy rain the tent stayed completely dry. Both the door shapes when opened after rain unfortunately allows rain to run down the sides and front and drop inside the area. Ideal tent for my wife and I, with all our paraphernalia, loadsa room for 2. Wouldn't like to try and squeeze a family in though. I would suggest a few spare poles to be on the safe side from other reports I've read. Needs some brighter guy lines as well.(or I need better glasses). Hope this report is useful.

This tent is fantastic, as a family of 3 it was ideal. Loads of living space which comes into it's own if weather not great and as our little one is only 2 it gave us lots of space to lounge about at night. I also found the lack of a light hanging 'bit' a tad annoying and wouldn't like to try and squeeze 5 in!
Pitching was a doddle and so was packing up. We bought poles to enable us to use the large front flap as a porch which was a bonus.

Nice little tent, just right for a family of 4 really.
Pitching is easy, first time took us probably 15 mins. With a bit of organization it is probably just the right size. On the downside with 2 double beds, cant store clothing in bedrooms but otherwise recommended especially if you plan on camping weekends due to ease/time pitching and breaking tent.

I bought this tent mainly due to the simplicity of the design-just 4 same length poles, as I have a OH who is not keen on camping at all but comes along under duress & hates the effort it involves. So I thought he'd have less to moan about with a really simple tent to erect. I chose well as its so simple to put up, the only problem I'd have doing it solo is the ring pin system which requires more strength than I have! Other than that, the space inside is great, it sleeps 4 comfortably ( can fit 2 double airbeds in each compartment but not a lot else). My only really small gripes would be: no centre piece to hang a main light from & slopes quite heavily at the front, reducing the inside space & is only really any good for storage. Overall its a fantastic tent & I'm really pleased with it & have just bought the front enclosed extension which I havent used yet. Little concerned that it may take the tent size up to 9m long approx & might have probs with pitch sizes, but we'll see.
