5 Reviews of the Idaho 400

By: Chumbeiro  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2009   Rating:

We have used this tent for four, two/three week extended summer Continental camping holidays. Tent is always packed and stored clean and dry.

Large and spacious the unit is easy to erect (with two people to support the weight) and pitches in around 15 minutes. Living area can take a small table and chairs or store two bikes/dog cage.

I own two other Vango tents (a lightweight backpacker and a 4 season, 3 man) and have been disappointed with the quality of manufacture of the Idaho. There is a narrow supporting pole (all four poles are heavy fibre-glass)between the living and bedroom areas and we had this snap on our first use during a period of fairly gusty wind. Since then 3 other sections of pole have snapped where the sections link together. This is probably due to constant stress due to movement/friction due to the lack of support provided by the guide ropes for the tall main section. Poles are repairable/replaceable but not really what you want to mess about with when on holiday! Have also found that the tent leaks from the seam above the bedroom area and via the weather strips covering the main door entrance.

After five years of use the material seems to have become rather brittle/flimsy.

Not really recommended unless you camp in well-protected/sheltered campsites. A pity as with the use of better quality materials this could have been an excellent family/touring tent.

Great tent for the two of us and our dog. Really impressed with how it stood up to the wind and rain of the Jubilee weekend on Dartmoor!

Very easy to pitch - we tend to leave the inner attached and just reattach the ground hooks, if necessary.

There is plenty of room for 2 plus 'luggage! in the sleeping area. And we are both able to stand to full height in the living area.

We only do two or three nights camping, two people and a dog so this tent is great for our purposes. It takes us approximately 20 mins to pitch, the only bit that we struggle with is the internal pole which tensions the roof above the bedroom area which can be difficult to get into position and we have had to get a replacement for this pole as the first one snapped. We love the built in groundsheet as it is so much easier than having to peg down separate areas. The bedroom is a great size, fitting a double airbed and enough room for bags and a dog down the side. We are able to stand up in the living area although we are not very tall and if you hang a lantern from the middle you do tend to bang your head on it!

I bought this for use by two of us and our dog. I wish I'd gone for the Idaho 500 as it has that little bit extra head room in the living area. The tent is very easy to erect and although moves about a lot in the wind it stood up to gale force weather no problem. It does suffer from rather a lot of condensation in the living area being single skin and we did suffer a couple of small puddles from this. The bedroom is compact but comfortable for two + dog. I find this tent ideal for weekends but for longer stays prefer something a little bigger.

Excellent tent for two, never had a problem with mine. Easy to pitch. Slightly weak in constant winds , but a lot of tents are. Bedroom area large enough for two /3 at a push.

Living area great size for up to three as well.
