5 Reviews of the Kalu V 400

I thought I would do an updated review here.

We've had our Kalu for several years now, and it is a great tent - room to stand up, sewn-in-groundsheet (no bugs), and 15-20 minutes to pop up.

Took to Latitude Festival again this year, worked well with a 'backpack gazebo' we got from Aldi and a generic screen.

Our inner is definitely not 'lights out' (I don't think it claimed to be), and we really only use it now as a 2-person tent with luxury airbeds, carpets etc - it would be tight space for 4 people (esp adults) if you were to need to stay in from the rain.

Haven't used it in really gnarly condition, but I suspect it would manage just fine.

Overall, a nice tent, and when I compare the weight with modern airbeam-style tents, it feels quite lightweight (for festival/car camping!)

Love it, love it love it love it. So easy to put up on my own, great ventilation, headroom fantastic, pockets everywhere, window on front door and a full mesh option, loads of other windows.

A tad optimistic calling it a four man but for a couple +1 would be fine, on your own it's brilliant. 10 mins to put up, really like the way the two carbon poles come off the central steel pole, reduces the risk of wet knees when putting up in the wet. Can split the sleeping area if needed so comes with two inner doors, much prefer this to one big one.

The difference in quality this Vango has over the Urban Escape tent it replaced is noticeable.

Packs away reasonably small so no problem with this on my motorbike.

The guys have a different clip on them, brilliant, no slipping!

Definitely have no problem recommending this tent to those looking for something smaller or an overnight/weekend tent.

I'm female single parent with a three-year-old, I bought this tent based on its easy/quick pitching for my 3yr olds first trip. It certainly is easy for one person to erect.

Sleeping space large but really for 2/3 people. The lights out material is not really effective, as previously cited a large mesh panel for airflow allows light in anyway.

Living space relatively small if it were a rainy day & you had to stay put. Lovely head room when standing, throughout the whole tent.

Overall a light weight tent very easy to erect and packaway as a single adult. Performed well in wind and rain

I suspect it was a 2014 made tent - I bought it in 2015 at a very good price (less than half the RRP show here) from Millett's.

The tent was really easy to put up, especially if you follow instructions to be found on YouTube and peg out the 4 corners and thread the fiberglass poles after the steel ones while it is still on the ground. Very quick pitch - and quicker from now on as I folded it with the inner in place.

Our first outing featured high winds, torrential rain and also hot sun (that's a UK Bank Holiday for you), and it was excellent in all these conditions. No condensation, very study, very waterproof.

The living space is on the small side - room for two chairs and some gear, but very good head height, The storage pockets are appreciated and there is a lantern hanging point on the living space.

Good touches: the guys have a locking mechanism so that they can't slip loose, and there are handy bits of Velcro to bundle each guy into to prevent tangling when you strike.

Quibbles: the 'lights -out inner' really isn't very effective - the inner is very thin material, and there is a big ventilation panel through which light streams, anyway.

My tent had zips which jammed on both sides of the main entrance flap. This was incredibly irritating when trying to open and close the main door in torrential rain without letting in too much water, never mind standing in said rain fiddling with a jammed zip. In fact I might ask for a replacement tent on this basis - it's not like Vango to have shoddily sewn-in zips, is it?

I like this tent for weekend camping - a sturdy, classy, practical little number.

Recently I used the Kalu V 400 for 4 weeks in Scotland.

Pitching is fast and easy even on a windy day.

Vango says its a 4 berth tent but that is sleeping space only, iff you have to use it in wet conditions then it is max. A 2 person tent. The windows are making it a very nice living space. The fabric is waterproof and the groundsheet is of a reasonable quality. In wet and windy conditions its still is a great tent and ventilation is no problem.

On the down side are the quality of poles(rust) and pegs(lead) Vango can improve both of them a lot. Poles are rusting on the joints after 4 weeks and I think the coating could be much thougher. The pegs are very soft and bend easily so there are points to gain as well.

Conclusion: really very good 2/3 person tent for a nice price but there is room for improvement on poles and pegs.

Should you buy a Kalu?

Yes its basically a good tent.
