4 Reviews of the Spirit 300+
By: Alpew Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2009 Rating:
Ideal for 2 people but would be a huge squeeze for 3. Its been out in all weathers and as yet, despite some very wet weather hasn't leaked once. Occasionally there is a bit of condensation but on the whole its not much of a problem.
My minor gripes with the 300 is that as the tent gets wet, the fabric stretches, (not much you can do about that with a nylon tent), which then means if you don't pitch it perfectly tensioned with the guys, the inner can touch the fly, when it rains with the weight of rain water on the fly. Its also difficult to keep dry in the door way of the tent as the way the door opens means that any rain on the fly drips into the porch.
I have purchased the extra fitted groundsheet which clips to the base of the fly and extends the length of the tent including the porch, which does make a great difference to keeping your kit dry.
We have managed to crack an aluminium pole section around the join which is a bit disappointing seeing that although the tent does get a lot of use, we do look after it, but spares are easily available.
On the whole I like the tent and would probably buy another.

I've had this tent for a few years now and I use it for solo car camping. It would be a bit of a squeeze for 3 adults but there's plenty of room for 2 and it's positively palatial for 1. The porch is huge with loads of room for cooking in foul weather as well as storing all your other gear.
This is an easy tent to pitch and I can do it on my own in about 15 minutes although I'm a bit fussy about tensioning the flysheet just right, so someone else would probably be faster. In addition, I don't pack it away as one unit but always separate the inner from the flysheet to keep it dry. Like all tunnel tents, the Spirit 300+ needs to be guyed out properly for maximum strength but once that's done, it is rock solid. I have never had to deploy the Tension Band System so can't vouch for its effectiveness, although it looks very good in theory.
The tent is highly waterproof and I've never had even a hint of a leak. It is also extremely good at handling condensation and I've never yet had a wet inner.
Overall, it's a brilliant tent and it would get 10 out of 10 if it had 2 flysheet doors instead of 1 and if the colour coding on 2 of the poles was a bit clearer. These, however, are minor gripes. A classic tent from Vango.

I brought a 2006 Spirit 300+ early in 06 Which I used fore Backpacking and cycle camping, both on sites and wild on the tops.
The first thing I did was throw away the pegs and replace them with pegs that stood a chance of keeping the darn thing attached to the ground in a blow.
Over two seasons of use it certainly never let us down.
It Never let in a drop or came even remotely close to even looking like it might blow down
I sold it at the end of 07 because for us it was close but not close enough to what we needed.
I have Just brought a 2010 Spirit 300+
Why?
I think the effort vango have put into the tent in the last four years have transformed it.
OK its got heaver up to a total weight of approx 3250g from 3000g. Which I think is a fare trade.
You still get a tent with a porch that will swallow a surprising amount of kit and leave room for you to sit and which is unlikely to leak or blow down [unless you abuse it].
Out of the bag you now get quality pegs, Pole sleeves that work, clips on the inner tent groundsheet that will let you tension the Fly with out them letting go and an inner tent long enough to sleep all but basket ball players.
In my View its about the right size for Two people and all the kit in comfort. It will sleep three but you would need to be good friends.
The only thing which is missing in my view is TBS on the rear pole.

PROS: Like a Tardis, small packed size but impressively large when pitched. Quick and easy to put up with pitch-as-one. TBS makes it very stable in windy conditions. Hasn't let in a drop of water even after days of torrential rain. Huge porch for cooking, storing gear, and taking off wet clothes without soaking sleeping bags etc.
CONS: It's nice and roomy for two but would be a bit of a squeeze for three. Only one door in the fly limiting pitching options. Sags when wet (but so do a lot of other tents). As-one pitching means the inner gets wet if you put it away in rain. Bit heavy for cycle camping. Condensation in the porch area. No groundsheet in the porch. (We use a 3x2m pe tarp to protect and keep clean the inner sewn-in groundsheet and a 2x1 for the porch). You can buy a footprint but we've never bothered.
