1 Reviews of the Tigris XL Canopy 600/800SD
By: OldRex Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2012 Rating:
Prospective buyers should note that this extension comes with a manufacturers warning that it should only be used in sheltered lowland locations.
I bought my Tigris 800XL because of its flexible layout and Vango's reputation. I bought this side extension at the same time, to increase the usable covered area on longer trips. The main tent is fantastic, well designed, well made and waterproof, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Unfortunately the extension seems a slight afterthought by comparison.
The extension comes with some niggles.
1) When it rains heavily, runoff from the main tent comes through where the main tent walls abut the extension, because of the extension's sloping sides. This means that you have to keep the (unattached) extension groundsheet pulled back from main tent unless you want a puddle inside your extension.
2) The flap which extends over the top does not reach far enough over the apex of the main tent and it flaps around if wind catches it from the wrong angle.
3) Also it creates a flat spot on top of the extension which causes a puddle to form on its roof in heavy rain. This however does not leak.
4)The guys which hold the flap over the roof were attached the wrong way around on delivery, so that the cam-cleats were up on the roof where I couldn't reach. Duh! Fortunately easily fixed.
5) Finally I have never managed to pitch the thing exactly to my liking, it just will not sit squarely on its poles. This is not helped by the tensioners which are only on one side of the fabric.
Despite these minor irritations, the extension serves its purpose well and adds nearly 9 square metres of extra usable space which is waterproof (away from the walls of the main tent). Unlike the main tent, the extension's poles have an elbow-joint design, I assume to increase usable floorspace. It has a very large window each side and 2 smaller wedge-shaped windows each side of the door. Each window has clip-up curtains. We used the door with canopy poles for added shade. As with every tent, the supplied pegs are rubbish and I would urge any owner to upgrade them ASAP. (I also urge manufacturers to supply decent pegs!)
In summary I am glad I have the extension, but it could be a bit better designed.
