3 Reviews of the Taurus II

By: Fitzydan  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2011   Rating:

Bought this for backpacking as the space to weight ratio seemed reasonable. Fits 2 comfortably with space but wouldn't like to try 3 really - could be very cosy. Poles (2) and pegs (10) are very light and assembly is very easy even for one person. The porch area is ideal for cooking and there are internal storage pockets for gear. The footprint (optional purchase but recommended) also extends into the porch.

Negatives - the porch doesn't reach the ground and 2 extra pegs or walking poles help peg them down to stop the flapping, the inner tent can poke out at the bottom under the flysheet but hasn't caused me a problem yet and one of the rear straps broke when I was tightening it but this was probably my fault but should have withstood the pressure. Overall great tent and I would recommend it.

I have used this tent in very wet and stormy conditions in Scotland and Lakes for three years now. Sharing it with two dogs was no problem space wise ,with all my kit indoors. I have always been dry and warm regardless of conditions. Porch large enough to permit cooking and easy access. Not too heavy for backpacking and quick to erect and take down. Probably the best tent I have had over decades of camping.

I selected this tent very carefully as its primary use would be as a backpacking tent, so weight/pack size/pitch time were major factors. I have say I definitely made the right choice, being a supposed 3 man tent it gives loads more room than a standard 2 man job and still weighs in st well under 3kg. The tent has been used in some wild locations and has proven 100% reliable.

Faults are hard to pick out but so as not to sound like a Vaude rep I'll try. The flysheet doesn't quite reach the ground along the back edge of the tent, though this has never caused problem, I feel it could in real heavy rain or very high wind allow weather to 'get under' the tent. As I say I've camped in some wild places and hasn't been an issue but I'm aware if it.

My other (minor) gripe is that the groundsheet is about as waterproof as a tablecloth, I notice the 2010 Taurus I has a heavier gauge groundsheet. I suppose this is a trade off for weight.

Overall this is totally positive review. The extra space of the 3 (very intimate) man size is a godsend when camping with gear in inclement weather, it also gives us good space to move around packing etc inside. The design is very good and most importantly the weight is fantastic. RECOMMEND.
