2 Reviews of the Citadel XL
By: DiabloFish Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2015 Rating:
Impressed so far, though it's only been out once.
It replaces my family's 'Homestead 5', but provides a serious step-up in terms of space and functionality.
The inside is ample, and well designed. Special note to the sewn-in groundsheet, the internal condensation drip-trays, and the storage bag being on wheels like a travel case.
The only things that stops it getting a 10 is the challenge of getting the tent erected. It's not a bad design, but it's just so large that it's a minimum of 2 people to get that first pole straightened and pegged, and ideally more. With the family around me then it's easy enough.
Recommended.

Having spent ages deciding which tent to buy I settled on the Citadel XL. Its a 6 man tent which actually does take 6 fully inflated airbeds and plenty of living area for wet days if needed.
Quality is superb and just has that 'better made' feel about it than a lot of other well known brands on the market. The ground sheet and the poles being the main notable difference. The groundsheet is much thicker and the poles are thicker and stronger giving you the feel of a really good quality robust tent. The Cumbrian winds and rain have certainly put it to the test!
For a big family tent it is unbelievably easy to put up. I can have it up and pegged out with my 10 year old son in 20 minutes. There is loads of living space inside and the ventilation is very good. For very wet days the design of the windows are excellent allowing them to be open and not let wind or rain in.
All doors and windows have good quality fly mesh on, and two really big clear plastic windows either side of the front door.
Minor picking points.
Wild country don't do a carpet for the tent but I bought the Montana 6 carpet for mine. It does not fit right to the edges, but this is probably better as it leaves room at the side door for muddy boots etc so the carpet stays clean.
Finally, if there is a drawback it is the lack of front porch. In wet weather this is a real bonus for sheltering under while cooking or leaving your 'outdoor' gear under. Even a detachable porch would be useful. Terra Nova tell me they have no plans to make one at present.
However, I have overcome this with the purchase of a cheap gazebo.
All in all this is a superb tent and I am really pleased with how mine has performed so far.

Manufacturer's Description
Updated for 2011 with new Jumbo pegs and kevlar reinforced main guy points.
A truly huge tent with a whopping 18m2 living space, the Citadel XL is the tent for families or groups who require extra space for storage, eating or just relaxing in comfort whatever the weather!
The 2 bedrooms are sized for airbeds and can be attached independently - the larger room also has a curtain for dividing it further if required. A sewn-in groundsheet covers the whole tent and keeps out ground damp, draughts and crawling insects, while the 2 full-height doors have bug-proof mesh so can be left open in hot weather. The end door can become an awning using the supplied awning poles, while the side porch offers a space for changing wet footwear without entering the main living area. Ventilation is adjustable and can be found at ground level as well as up high.
To support this massive structure we are using our new Jumbo Poles - the strongest we've ever made for family tents - as well as lots of reinforced guylines, and this makes for a stable and strong shelter. Pitching is also simple thanks to the straight-forward design and colour-coded poles.
A Temperature Moderator is available separately to help reduce the temperature inside on hot, sunny days.
