1 Reviews of the Saturn 6
By: ClarelovesTents Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2007 Rating:
Firstly, I'm assuming its a 2007 but aren't sure, we bought it in 2009 for a pretty good price of £150 as the shop was closing down. I believe its rrp was £300. Although its a 6 man tent my partner and I find it great for longer breaks in it as there is a spacious centre living area, plenty tall enough to stand up in, which is great for fitting a decent sized table and our two moon chairs in. We normally use one end as a bedroom, which is a good size for a double air bed and space down either side for a holdall bag etc a piece. We then use the other bedroom as a storage area as if we are off for two weeks we tend to have a suitcase a piece and set of drawers to hold all the cooking things in, and cool box etc.
The front porch is plenty big enough for a cooking stand, and the two windows have a curtain each which is a nice feature. The large front porch door unzips from both sides and there are two poles that come with it so you can pin it up like a canopy. In each of the bedroom ends both side walls have pockets stitched into the walls which are great for keeping your light weight must haves like your torch close to hand. The back of the main section has two door openings and windows high up, again with sewn in curtains you can roll back. There are also two triangular sections you can unzip which leaves a mesh barrier against bugs, great for ventilation. There are zippable ports at front and back of the main living area if you have electrics, and a series of velcro tabs up one 'corner' to the centre if you have an electric lamp, to keep your cable tidy. The light colour of the tent is pleasant from the inside as some I've seen are really dark (Vango!) and dingy and a bit like you're sat in a cave! Not so with the Saturn 6, from the outside it looks like green and cream but inside it looks a bit turquoisy. Jolly! The downside we have found is that its a bit temperamental to pitch. It pitches inner first, and you really have to get it up really square and accurate or when you try to attach the fly sheet to it, it all goes a bit wrong! In the 7 times we have pitched it properly (plus two in the garden for maintenance) we ve only pitched it what we would consider properly once!
More often than not we end up with the fly sheet higher at one side and lower at the other which can be a bit drafty! And believe me, if you're pitching in adverse conditions and you've got as far as getting the fly sheet over, the last thing you want to do is haul it off again to start jigging around with the poles all over again! Having said that, the fly attaches securely to the inner by way of sewn on ties underneath and some toggles (you just have to insert yourself between the inner and outer whilst trying not to fall forward onto the tent and work in a methodical way to enable you to remove your person from said location after you've tied everything down. There are many many luminous guy lines to help secure it all too which is useful in bad winds. The fly sheet has tabs on it that secure it down where the poles meet the ground, and if you haven't managed to get everything on exactly perfect these are really troublesome to attach. If we have been pitching in the middle of bad weather we have often come up with some really novel ways off getting round this, none of which I think the manufacturer would approve of but nonetheless seemed to do the job as quick as possible before total saturation or divorce was achieved.
On the 4th or 5th pitch we broke two pole sections quite easily - the poles seem to be a couple of inches too long in my opinion and really take a set curve after putting the tent up for the first time - the tent looks really weird and like straining to busting when you have the first two main poles in only - but theyre quite thick poles and in with your tent you get an emergency kit which comprises a metal sleeve you can quick fix a split section of pole with until you have time/conditions to replace it. Since then we bought some spares and a threading kit to make this easier for when it next happens. We have also managed to pop the ground sheet whilst camping in the new forest due to all the flint - despite clearing the area as best as possible, and fixed this with fabric tape which worked surprisingly well! For a pretty large tent it also withstood some quite bad windy nights on Anglesey remarkably well, probably due to all the guy lines helping take the strain off the poles.
All in all its a pretty good tent to say its possibly more of a budget one (at least what we paid for it!) and have been happy with it. We have had no condensation and the only time it leaked I think was because we cheated and didnt do all the ties up between the two layers and some water tracked down them onto the inner. We have since camped two rainy nights in the Lakes October 2011 and it never leaked a drop - what more can you ask!? I would certainly recommend the tent to people who will take care of it properly, and you get a lot more out of it by pitching it correctly!
