We recently started camping after a few years and needed a new tent. We went to a reputable outdoors store reasonably close to us to look at their vast array. Hidden in a corner was the Da Gama 4 and it was on offer. It was end of line and they were selling the display tent complete with footpring, carper and extension for £200.

The tent is easy to pitch with very few poles. The sleeping pods are like most tents in that they are quite compactbut they will accomodate double airbeds with a bit of room to spare. The living area is spacious and quite cosy with the carpet down. The extension isn't completely sealed but in all but extreme conditions is water tight while being ventilated. If the rain was torrential and the wind in the wrong direction I guess some water could blow in from the sides.

While we don't generally go camping in really bad weather, the first time we used it we had some pretty heavy rain on the last night with no leaks at all. Luckily the following morning was bright and sunny with plenty of heat to dry the tent before packing up.

The only things I can mark it down on are as previously mentioned, the window covers have loop & toggle fasteners which can be tricky in the dark. The other things are not enough storage pockets. Just one relatively small pocket in each of the sleeping pods. Pity they haven't got the pockets like the Outwells vertically between the two pods and nowhere to hang a lantern from. The final minus point is that the sleeping area could do with being darker as passing torchlight at night leaks through a bit too much.

I got this as a weekend tent for myself and a couple of under-10s. I wanted a steel-framed tent that I could stand up in, with a decent sized living area, and which would be fairly straightforward for me to put up on my own, quickly enough to justify a one-night stay.

The choice was between this and the Vango Calisto- I like the vertical door at the front of each. The Da Gama and the Calisto appear to be basically identical, other than the layout of the inner tent. The Calisto has a single room, the Da Gama 400 has a removable partition which can be zipped all the way round, which I prefer to the ones that are loose at the bottom. With the little ones, I've taken the partition out, but it'll be used later in the summer with their big brother, so we'll both get a bit more privacy with it up.

As of now it's been out twice. It's stood up to some quite heavy wind, rain and hail without any drama. It's well made, and getting it up isn't complicated- I reckon I can do this in about 20 minutes. An odd thing that I like is the colour- this can be enough to make me feel vaguely nauseous inside some tents, but this one's pleasant to be in.

Minor grumbles that stop me giving it full marks are;

1. Bearing in mind that erecting the tent isn't rocket science, the instructions aren't that clear. They're a bit like the ones you get on flat-pack furniture- one area where Vango seem to have an edge over other manufacturers is their pitching videos.

2. The guy ropes have 3-hole straight runners- these aren't the easiest to adjust when your fingers are cold and wet. I've replaced these with line-lok style runners that you'd find on a Vango.

3. The curtain on the window could do with a zip, rather than a hoop and peg at the bottom. This means that you end up fumbling about down the side of the folding table, because this is where you're most likely to put it.

Overall though, I'm very happy with the tent and we're all looking forward to it's next outing.
