One word AMAZING!

We have been blown away by the quality and attention to detail of this magnificent tent manufacturer.

We bought ours second hand and it is worth every penny.

The tent becomes awesome with the additional side screens and porch, it provides a great outside space and adds to the aesthetic - I think this is what really makes a de waard.

The reality of owning one: It is a heavy tent and takes up most of the car boot space. It has to be really cared for with cleaning and maintenance to remove bird poop/dirt etc. It cannot be put away wet/damp and needs some serious space to dry out at home if packed wet from the camp site.

The guy ropes take some time to peg put - but this only needs to be done once if done properly.

With practice it goes up easily and is actually quite simple and straight forward. I couldn't put the tent up on my own, but my husband could.

It is a solid tent and there really is no noise or movement from it flapping around like typical polyester tents.

The tent maintains heat well in the cold weather and doesn't get stuffy and too hot in warmer weather. The space inside is good, some loss of space due to the low side design but still better than any tent I have had previously.

This is a luxury tent and I am not sure I could buy a new one with the extras for over €2000

A good well looked after second hand one is far superior to any other tent, these really are the business!

We had 4 adults in ours with ease but for just 2 adults and a dog it is glamping at its finest!

As we are now on our third Lepelaar I thought it time that we submitted a review of this fantastic tent.

Our first Lepelaar and our current one have been bought second hand from Marktplaats. The tent we use now was new in 2004 and is in fantastic condition. No rips, no marks, no broken zips, no pulled threads. The quality of the workmanship is fantastic. And what better demonstration of that, than the fact that you can buy 20+ year old tents on Markplaats.Still perfectly useable.

The first point to note is just how stable the tent is.

The tent itself is made from 320gram cotton canvas together with steel poles. Once the groundsheet is pegged out and the tent is put up, the fly sheet is pegged and then tightened, almost like a drum. This makes the tent incredibly strong and there is no question that it will stand up to any sort of weather.

Secondly, it is a very versatile tent.

We have the optional front canopy (vario luifel) and the inner tent. It is the canopy that truly makes the tent in my opinion. It is where we spend all our time and offers a completely flexible set up. So you can open up one or both sides if it's sunny, close it all up if it's windy and a multitude of variations in between. And because you are outside, you are not cut off from your surroundings, or other people. And talking of other people, I'm always amazed by just how many people come and talk to us about the tent, a testament I think, to the great design.

The tent itself is designed as a four man tent. We are two adults and two (young) children and there is plenty of room for us and our things. We tend to live under the canopy, use the front of the tent for storage and sleep in the optional inner.

The inner does add a touch of luxury, it's made from cotton and has a fleece carpet. Lovely for longer trips.

For a week or longer it's a great set up but probably a bit too much for a weekend tent. It's not that it's difficult to put up, it's actually very easy and no problems for one person, but it does take some time.

So there we have it, if you are looking for a well made family tent that will last years, stand up to any weather and stand out in a crowd, look no further.

This is a fabulous, quality tent. These Dutch tents are in a league of their own; the Rolls Royce's of the tent world. The design is superb. As such, they are expensive, but built to last. Which of our children shall we leave it to?

We really enjoy camping in it; it is also very much admired by other campers. Thick canvas means it is warm and snug in cold wet weather and at night, and not too hot in the mornings in hot, sunny weather. It feels like a home from home, glam camping at its best. The built in ground sheet is very thick and the inner tent has a fleece floor. You can buy a nifty little device with hooks, that attaches to the top of a pole; we use it for drying off towels and waterproofs under the varioluifel (front awning). There is also a useful canvas pocket attachment where newspapers, torches, maps, car keys etc. Can be stowed.

Its aerodynamic shape means it stands up extremely well in gale force winds as long as it is pitched with its back to the wind. We have modified the varioluifel with the help of velcro to close off the front of the tent completely in the event of a wind direction change in stormy weather; the only thing the manufacturers did not fully consider as a use for the varioluifel. The varioluifel, as bought, makes both a wonderful sunshade and windshield and can be used in lots of positions.

It is a bit tricky and time consuming to put up the tent and does need two people. I would not bother using it if I was staying on one site for less than about four nights, but definitely worth the extra comfort for a longer stay. It also really needs a flat site to get it pitched perfectly; I don't suppose that the Dutch have to worry about sloping ground too often!

I would not like to have to take it down whilst the canvas is wet or damp from dew, so early morning decamps are a no no. We decamp in the afternoon and sleep in a backpacker tent if we have to get an early start the next day.

The tent is bulky so if you have a family you are going to have to invest in a trailer. With all the rest of the gear it is not going to fit in the boot/roof of the average family car. There are just two of us, we have the back seats down and everything only just fits in.

We are now retired and use this tent several times a year. If I still had a young family and only camped once a year for a longish stay plus a few weekends, this tent would probably not be the answer, especially as it is so expensive to buy. I think it is for the camping enthusiast, with a bit more time, to be able to get the most from this superb tent. A bit like a classic car really!
