8 Reviews of the Sun Porch
By: Adiep Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2012 Rating:
I have two Kyham sun porches on an Indianna 8, one is used as a porch/cooking area, the other as a bathroom/store.
The porch was a few centimetres off the ground which allowed the wind and rain to get inside which was my only gripe about this excellent additional space.
I had a tent footprint for which I no longer have the tent. This I cut into 25CM strips and cut to the length of the sides and front of the porch. I used three pieces for the front so the door could be opened and tied back. I used 3M double sided tape to secure the strips in position then sewed it on using a domestic sewing machine with a heavy duty needle and polyester thread. The remainder of the footprint I cut to the size of the interior. I now have a fully enclosed porch which is weatherproof. The colour matches brilliantly and it's impossible to know it wasn't made by Kyham without close inspection. I could even use it as an additional bedroom if needed.
Why they don't do this in the first place is beyond me.
I've uploaded pictures as a reference.
On the whole, an excellent, sturdy space which goes up in just over ten minutes.

Bought this to compliment my Quebec 8 and it is a great addition to this. As others have said it is a pain to put up and get right, but with a few uses you get used to this. Have not managed to get this totally snug and due to shape some water has run down side of main tent into porch area, but not an issue considering this is an outside storage area that protects actual tent from rain running in
This has both a door and a zip out front wall to turn this into a Sun Canopy (same as some other makes) and this is a really good point for me.
Now on to stability, (there are a lot of Guying points on this). Now it is said Porches and canopies should come down in high winds. We had one night where the wind came on late evening and was particularly fierce, aided by deltas this was rock solid. In fact due to knowing that the winds were likely to continue for a couple of days took down the next morning before going out, and regretted doing so. As well as the rain in the tent issues, found that the Porch had actually added stability as winds had not been so strong the second night, but the tent was (though very stable not as much as the night before) had noise from the outer double skin on Quebec the porch suppressed and then of course had to put it all back up again.
All in all a good buy

We bought one of these last year to increase our storage space and primarily use as a kitchen area. It takes longer to assemble this than the tent itself and can be a bit awkward to line it up to minimise the gaps, but I wouldn't be without it now. Everything inside it stays dry and it's given us so much more inner space for our toddler to play in during the great British 'summers' we've had.

I also own a Gelert Quebec 8+4 and used the Khyam sun porch for the 1st time last week. Very pleased with this purchase - loads of room inside for all our kitchen equipment, storage units and kids buckets and spades. I also felt it made the tent feel warmer and certainly more spacious. I would not be without this very useful piece of equipment.

I own a Gelert quebec8+4 and I recently brought the Kyham Sun Porch. It fits perfectly against my tent and as no gaps, and when we did have rain no water came in other than the bottom gap but was no problem. The last time we used it at Whit we went to Talybont for the week and on the Wednesday we were woken with very strong winds and rain, sadly the porch didnt stand up to well but nor could we as it was a gale and as we are not experienced campers we had the door/porch facing the sea! Something we will not do again. I find the porch great for use as a kitchen, could even fit a table and chair into it. Me and hubby easily put the porch up. Its ideal if you plan staying camping for more than a weekend. If we went away for just 1-2 nights I wouldn't take it I think. I would highly recommend this porch as it says it fits most tunnel style tents, it is a perfect fit against mine anyway.

We now have 2 of these, one for each side of our Kyham Ontario 8. We will use one as storage for coats, wellies, bats, balls etc and the other for the kitchen things. As others have said, these sun canopies do not keep out the rain as they do not fit tight against the tent, but they do keep everything actually inside them dry. They also stop the draft from between the sig and the bottom of the door in the Ontario 8. They are harder to put up than our tent and definitely need 2 people, ideally 3, as two can hold the poles whilst the 3rd person pegs it down on the other side of the tent.

We bought the sun porch this summer to go with our Kansas 8. It goes together easily and the poles are really strong. A piece goes over the top of the tent and is pegged out over the other side.It is very spacious and we had our kitchen set up inside it. It doesn't fit right against the side of the tent so in driving rain it can get a little wet inside near the gap but this was not a problem if you store things away from the gap. Its a brilliant space and I would not use the tent without it now. We left the canopy on even in very strong winds and it stayed in one place thankfully. As it is all enclosed, it protects the inside of the tent from getting wet when you open the main door.Worth every penny for us.

We bought one of these when we realised that our Kansas 8 tent needed a canopy because you can't open the door in heavy rain without the tent flooding. We have the old model which doesn't have front door like the one shown above. Overall, it's pretty good, but the piece which goes over the top of the tent is very hard to tension and consequentially flutters in moderate winds, which is fairly annoying. Perhaps now Khyam have enclosed the whole of the canopy with the front door this will not happen! Other than that, it's well made, waterproof and I reckon is a fairly essential accessory.
