I have a spacepacker plus mk1 and it has withstood the winds up Ben Macdui (2nd highest mountain in Britain) the flysheet is ripstop SilNylon which I believe was another Saunders first when he used it for flysheets. It is quite easy to have plenty of enthusiasm for Robert Saunders products.

I was given a Saunders Jetpacker tent a few years ago; in good condition after many years. I have only spent a few nights in it so far but thought that I would post a review as this is a classic tent; one of the first lightweight solo backpacking tents of its kind; introduced in the 1980’s I believe.

The tent is of the tapered ridge design, with a shorter pole at the rear. The tent pitches fly first, but it is a bit of a fiddle to position the pegs and tension the guys correctly to avoid wrinkles and sags in the fly. Space inside is limited, to say the least, and the front pole obstructs access somewhat (it is possible to temporarily move it off centre whilst you get in). Having said that, the tent is cleverly designed and well made – I particularly like the way that the poles nest inside one another, and is well suited to its intended use; solo backpacking. Rain is no problem, even after 30 years, and although I haven’t been in the tent in a storm, I would be confident that it would withstand all but the most extreme conditions.

The tent including bag weighed in at 1463g on my kitchen scales; this is heavy compared to some modern lightweight tents, but is still not much to carry. Internal dimensions are 199cm long, 124cm wide at the front, 77cm wide at the rear. Max internal headroom at the apex is 77cm; this reduces to 40cm at the rear. There is a small porch for boots, bags etc.

I’m giving the Jetpacker 8/10; a point deducted as it is not the easiest tent to pitch correctly (and get in and out of), and a point deducted when compared to the weight and size of some modern lightweight tents (in its day I would have given it a 9). Nevertheless, the Jetpacker is still an excellent solo backpacking tent, and I look forward to many nights in the wilds with it!
