10 Reviews of the Omega 250

Brilliant, first tent I’ve had, 2nd hand on eBay. I bought this for solo motorbike camping after reading reviews here and it is ideal. Great balance of weight vs packed size. Plenty of space inside for all my gear and high enough to sit in a chair comfortably in the lobby. Really easy to set up and after three days of heavy rain it stayed completely dry inside. Very impressed.

Really versatile tent. Perfect for mini Dachshund and me ;-) in fact it will comfortably accommodate two 'sleepers' plus kit as well as utilising the porch as a guest room (just watch the groundsheet gap for uninvited arthropod insurrection!). I found the porch area a lovely space to relax in with my short-legged reclining seat. All in all it felt like a much larger tent and was much enjoyed.

Re various probs proposed by fellow reviewers: leave enough time to get it up properly, especially with regard to touching flysheet issues. Proper taughtness WILL eliminate the problem. Also, arriving in good time will save 02.00am frustration with quylines and the clip-in porch groundsheet! Good time-management leads to happy, successful, stress free, highly enjoyable, rain free, camping trips in this great tent!

Got this from Decathlon in the sale for £100 and really like it. I wanted a tent where I could also put my bicycle in if need be and this lets me :-)

Loads of room both in the main part and the external part which can be used for cooking etc. If raining. I get my bicycle, all my gear and trailer in their.

I pitch mine with the inner already in it and don't bother removing it, this is down to Vango recommended it to me. Here is their tips they emailed me on packing up this tent -

----------------------

Leave the inner in place, but leave the inner door partially open.

Hold the flysheet by grabbing the roof and lay out flat on the ground. Fold the ends of the tent in to the middle to make a square.

Then folding from the closed side / Roof edge of the tent fold in thirds toward the open end / Bottom edge of the tent until it is roughly the same width as the tentcase, Folding in thirds from the closed door to the open door will allow the air trapped inside to escape, flatten as necessary whilst folding.

Place the poles on top, and then roll as tightly as possible from one end to the other.

----------------------

Hope this helps other people. I have put 2014 for when my tent was made but no idea really, I purchased it in 2014.

Good basic tent for the money. Guylines are a little awkward but can be adjusted fairly easily. I think I will maybe alter their arrangement slightly as they seem overly complex at one end of the tent. Problems with the touching flysheet can be sorted by ensuring the elastic cords on the corners are fully stretched out properly. The living area groundsheet is simply an irritation and I use trimmed off camping mats instead.

As an adventurer and usually putting up tent in the dark the guy rope system is rubbish and total waste of time, very poor design, slides don't work, ropes get tangled. Out of the 8 or 9 tents I have it's the worst for putting up and will be selling to get rid of it. Yes its ok ad a base camp for a few days or weeks but not for putting up quickly in the rain. Disappointing.

Myself and my partner have used this tent for a number of camping trips: long weekend at Kielder Forest, 3 week camping trip to Scotland and various other weekends away.

For a reasonably lightweight tent it is very spacious for 2 people. We have plenty of space for all our gear in the living area and we could easily fit an extra person into the sleeping area.

It is quick to pitch (10 mins) but if not pitched correctly the inner of the sleeping area can touch the fly - this can be corrected using the guy lines and/or repositioning pegs.

We haven't had any problems with leaks/rain or wind: in Kielder it rained solidly for 3 days and we had some quite heavy rain and strong winds in Scotland.

It is irritating that the groundsheet of the living area does not seal/meet with the fly - there is a 2' gap pretty much all the way around which led to midges getting into the living area in Kielder. We fixed this for Scotland with some midge netting and sticky-back velcro.

There are also a couple of extra bits of torn material sewn into seams - this is our second Vango tent and this has been a feature of both. This doesn't effect the performance of the tent but indicates a lack of care/attention to detail during manufacture.

Overall this seems to be a reliable tent which is perfectly capable of standing up to bad weather and we have no qualms about using it in the Outer Hebrides next year.

Used mine as a base for 13 days during an archaeological dig at Hadrian’s wall, the weather was so appalling that areas of the camp site actually flooded and the dig was 3 foot underwater and had to be abandoned for a few days BUT THE TENT REMAINED BONE DRY THROUGHOUT!. As I am over 50 years old the low tent height did tell a bit on the hips and back towards the end of the second week, but the large “Sitting room” was big enough to keep all my kit in and still have room for me to sit in my folding chair and watch movies on my lap top. Indeed the only “problem” I had was with the “Orange” colouring of the guy lines, in the mud and rain they took on the appearance of juicy big worms that were understandably very appealing to the local ducks, (who were most disappointed when chased off at 05:30).

In conclusion, a useful and reliable bit of kit, nice and light and very easy to pitch, (it dried very quickly too!), good enough for a serious amateur, and I dare say based on its performance in the wet conditions that it might give a few of its more serious and expensive rivals a run for their money.

This is an update on my previous revue (see below) The fact is that Vango were totally useless at conforming to their guarantee. Basically they refused to accept my more than clear photographs of the problem of the flysheet touching the tent, hence letting in water, and insisted on my returning the flysheet for their own inspection - with no provision for carriage or promise of returning it.

In the meantime the guyropes have started to break - after only a half dozen pitches! Vango have sent me a three spare guyropes, but as these are the same type as the originals I don't have much hpe for them.

It seems to me obvious that Vango have outsourced their manufacture but haven't any quality control. And their reaction to the customer is simply feeble. In summary, I'm far from satisfied with both the tent and Vango as a company. I certainly won't buy another Vango product.

I bought this tent specifically for camping trips on my adventure motorbike - its light weight and small pack size is ideal for the bike's limited payload and the spacious 'lobby' is essential for storing wet weather clothes, chunky luggage bags, etc. Away from the 'dry zone' inside the tent. And it is tall enough for me to sit comfortably in my chair, the one ‘luxury’ Desert Island Disks fashion!

As I only intended to use the tent for solo trips I used the 2:1 formula to select the 250. But in the event an emergency stop with the family one weekend showed that the Vango’s capacity is indeed ‘as advertised’ and then some – 2 adults, 2 air beds and 2 fully grown huskies was a tall order for a two man tent, but we did it!

Two criticisms: The tiny nylon clips used to attach the tent groundsheet to tags on the flysheet, and thus to the pegs (the pegs are as useless on this tent as on the Omega 350 reviewed elsewhere) are infuriating to undo, their minute size in disproportion to their enormous strength. The only way I could open them and dismantle the tent was to dig out a screwdriver from my bike’s toolkit! I’ve since replaced them with larger aluminium carabiners, but see my next gripe below!

Secondly, in my tent I can’t get the bell-end of the flysheet taught and so it touches the tent inner, itself trussed up against it by the above clips. This causes moisture to penetrate freely – all over the foot end of the sleeping bag to make things worse! In the end I’ve pegged the tent separately rather than clip it to the fly sheet but it’s not a good solution as this leaves the ground sheet loose and it crumples up, which for some reason doesn’t strike me as being a good idea. I’ve read of quality control issues regarding Vango tents but I’m not sure I’m gong to be able to do much about it as the tent was bought in the UK but shipped to Spain, where I live. So we’ll have to see how good the guarantee is!

Great tent - lightweight and good for short trips and backpacking. I went to the Black mountains to re-visit my mountain experiences of 20 years ago! We had a great time, although it rained all weekend. This tent stood up to the weather, and it also looks great. Takes me about 3-5 minutes to pitch (says 10 but you would have to be very slow to do that!) I researched all the tents - and found this to be best value for weight - I wanted one I could put in my rucsack - which it did. Really pleased with it, good for walking and camping trips - probably not quite in the proper mountain tents for serious mountaineers! but for us wannabees its perfect. Sleeps 3 (1 adult and 2 kids) at a push.
