2 Reviews of the Helium 200

By: Richsoft  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2012   Rating:

I have recently bought the 2012 model (which has lost is Superlite tag) which is slightly heavier than the 2011 model at 1.3kg. I suspect that this is mainly due to addition of an extra pole, so that both ends are now held up. I think this may help stop the flysheet pushing into the tent in the wind.

The tent is small, and there is no way you would want a second person in it! It is however big enough for me and my rucksack to fit in without feeling cramped; in fact I am surprised how roomy it actually feels. It is quite low, but I can sit up comfortably.

There are a couple of things that I think I should mention.

* There are no storage pockets in the inner, which I miss as I like to put my glasses in them at night.

* I couldn’t get the fly sheet particularly taught, so the tent would have been a bit noisy if the wind got up. I suspect that this has a lot to do with my (bad) choice of pitch, which was on uneven ground on a slope. I understand that many tents of this design are like this, so will have to see if I can do any better next time!

* The supplied pegs are small V alloy types, which seem too short at about 3in long. I have replaced them with some titanium skewers and a couple of alloy Y pegs, as they stay in the ground very well in my experience.

Overall I am very pleased with Helium and it is exactly what I need. A very lightweight tent that I could take backpacking.

You may not want to take this tent if you are planning on a long stay in the same place due to in size, but that is what I have a Vango Spirit 200+ for. The fact that the Helium is about a third of the weight and packs down to about a quarter of the volume of the Spirit makes it great for throwing in the rucksack!

Very light tent that stands up very well to wind and rain. The tent can be put up in just over 5 min by one person. The tent is not only lightweight, it packs down so small it easily fits in a rucksack.

The down side is size. The 2 person tent is really only big enough for one person and when it rains heavy or there is a strong wind, the bit where your head is can be made even smaller as the outer flysheet pushes down on the inside of the tent. There is only one pocket inside and since there is no covering for the small inner mesh, there can be a bit of a breeze.

If you buy one of these, I would recommend you buy some extra pegs (4) that way you can put up the outer flysheet on its own and then the inner without having to take pegs back out.

Once you have used this tent once, you can leave the inner attached allowing you to pitch as 'all in one'.
