2 Reviews of the Crusader DL
By: Annetax Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2013 Rating:
Had ours for 4 years now from second hand. Traded up from a TT. So much easier/quicker to put up but still have the fun of a tent overhead.
We had a couple of minor design quibbles or we would give it 10. Kitchen sink needed a mod to prevent flooding (thank you internet). Similar issue with bathroom sink (thank you internet again). We set up in the spring and then it is ready to go at a moments notice. Love it!

I've recently bought a 10 year old Conway Crusader and have carried out three outings in it so far.
Being lower than a caravan it creates much less drag, and a lower loading from sidewinds makes it very stable. It's a little lighter than a caravan, think of it as a 6 berth for the weight of a 2/4 berth. On a recent motorway run to the New Forest I achieved an unbelievable 46.7 MPG on the way down and 50.0 MPG on the return leg of the 160 mile journey (2017 Skoda Yeti SE L Drive 2.0 TDi 4x4)
The Conway Crusader, along with it's stablemate the Pennine Pathfinder is a top of the range folding camper with plenty of goodies as standard. Mine has been retrofitted with the newer Isabella acrylic top and this, I'm told, keeps to a bit warmer inside along with being very waterproof. It's easy to unfold the camper, even single-handed; gas struts ease the task of swinging the beds over. It doesn't take that long to set up either. Most of the time seems to go on levelling up, fetching water, connecting services up - all the things you would have to do with a caravan anyway.
Spec will vary from model to model, however they all have two double bedrooms and a facility to turn the seating area into another two berths. An enclosed electric flush cassette toilet with hot/cold water washbasin is part of the package, as is a generously sized fridge with freezer compartment (12V/240V/gas). A three burner hob and grill may also be accompanied by a decent sized oven you can make your roast dinner in. Mine also has a small electrically operated immersion tank for instant hot water although some older ones have a gas/electric water heater. A wardrobe is supplemented by other handy bits of storage in the form of cupboards and under-seat stowage areas.
Two fluorescent and three smaller traditional lights provide illumination. An optional leisure battery can be fitted and is kept topped up while on mains hookup by a transformer unit. The unit will take two 4.5kg butane bottles, no bigger than that. I've opted for two of the identically sized 3.9kg propane bottles for winter operation.
The front, back and right hand windows are velcroed and can be rolled out of the way to leave just a mesh window for extra ventilation in summer. The left hand (door) side window doesn't open but the whole side zips out. Most owners have the full awning with the camper, mine has an airbeam porch awning specially made for the Crusader/Pathfinder although I haven't had a chance to try it yet.
It's a very practical unit which can be stored in a normal sized garage when not in use. The acrylic material was warmer than I expected, with a 2kw fan heater making winter camping quite bearable as long as temperatures start off with a plus rather than a minus. Well recommended.
