4 Reviews of the Hilleberg Niak
By: Matthewalanclarke Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2019 Rating:
A others have said, the Niak is a really spacious tent for one person that oozes quality in design and execution. It's marketed as a 1.5 size and I like to use it with my small dog. It's a breeze to put up and down and is very quiet and stable, especially if all guy out points are utilised. I do wish the door had an optional solid panel, as the mesh lets cool air in when the temps drop, and the vestibule is a tad small, but otherwise I can't fault it, unless you're looking for something ultralight.

A 3 season lightweight tent which would be cramped for 2 persons but offers generous space for one person.
Small pack size and weighing 1.7 k makes it suitable for backpacking.
I find the interior space and height generous, allowing 175cm me to sit upright and plenty of room for gear.
The build quality is superb.
It is freestanding, pitches as one in just a few minutes and can be pegged with just 6 pegs although 4 more are recommended if more than a gentle breeze is expected.
The vestibule is small and just big enough to store boots.
You would need to unclip a corner of the inner and move it backwards to create enough space for careful use of a small stove in bad weather.
I would recommend cooking outside rather than inside.
I use a small porch tarp over the entrance door to avoid rain getting into the tent when entering and leaving. This also allows the entrance door to be partially open when raining to improve ventilation.
To summarise a spacious well built tent for one person or at a pinch two with minimal gear.

Bought my niak for a cycling/camp trip, lightweight &very quick to erect (5 mins) with outer & inner going up in one, there are two 9mm L/W aluminium poles that go into a sleeve on the fly & the ends sit into a reinforced holder one side & a cup on the other, once erected its very roomy inside, the water resistant inner is bright yellow which is warm & bright, I used this tent on Dartmoor in November, pouring with rain , blowing a gail & freezing cold, it held up exceptionally well & I felt very secure it didn’t budge in all that wind & wasn’t flappy ,as for condensation, there was none as air flow is continuous, zips are free flowing & can be secured , door is wide so easy to get in & out of both inner & outer, I used the vestibule for cooking, not the biggest but ample room for cooking or luggage, the inner tent has a full mesh door, I would have preferred to have the option, but it is three season not four, materials used are exceptionally strong , easy to dry & very waterproof ground sheet is also top quality, the tent pegs are L/W aluminium with pull strings attached ( very useful) fits back into the stuffsacks easily.
Overall this is a top of the range quality built tent built to last for years , expensive but worth every penny, tried & tested by me in the most challenging weather & it still looks brand new

The Niak seemed to tick all my boxes so I bought one last November for solo camping. Now I've had the opportunity to use it a bit, it's time for a review. The Niak is as well made as a tent can be and is what you expect from this manufacturer. Every review of a Hilleberg tent seems to focus on quality though, but what's it like to use?
The Niak can be erected in under two minutes with little practise. It's equally easy to take down and pack. Inside there is loads of room for one person. However two users would struggle to find anywhere to put their hiking kit and if backpacking, I can only recommend the Niak for solo use. The porch though is small and steep sided. You can't safely cook in it. The porch has barely enough room for a rucksack and boots.
The Niak feels comfortable and spacious in use and there is space for a tall chap to sit up and move around. It will handle shockingly bad rain no problem at all. Moderate wind also poses it no threat. I've not tried it in heavy wind yet but I would be cautious in describing it as 'bombproof' (a term applied liberally in reviews these days). It is clearly best suited to lowland hiking.
Condensation is an issue. The condensation largely confines itself to the inside of the flysheet, but also seems to form along the inside lower back edge of the inner, which I find odd.
Opening the outer door when it's covered in condensate WILL cause it to drip into the inner. In moderate breeze the condensation isn't a noticeable problem. Drying the inside of the Niak is a pain in the butt. You have to unfasten the inner. I recommend doing this while the tent is still pegged out, otherwise it'll turn into a large flat kite. The inner is the only thing that gives the outer any form. Getting in and out in the rain is also a struggle. There's no real problem if you aren't sharing, as long as you keep your bedding towards the back and carry a small Part to mop drips. I feel I've been a bit harsh so far. As a package the Niak is an excellent tent. It's solidly built, spacious and comfy. Once you're in and zipped up you'll have a great night's sleep.

Manufacturer's Description
THE NIAK expands on our concept of very lightweight yet remarkably strong three-season tents that we introduced with our one-person Enan. Ideal for two people who want to go as light as possible, the Niak is also a veritable lightweight palace for one person. Its dimensions accommodate two people, but its single door and lengthwise vestibule make it somewhat less comfortable than our other two person models, so the Niak is especially good for a parent and a child, or for one person and a dog. It is also the perfect three-season solo tent when you want to be as comfortable as possible at a low weight.
As with our other Yellow Label models, the Niak’s outer tent is made from our lightest weight Kerlon 1000, and it is supported by the same DAC NSL 9 mm poles used in our Red and other Yellow Label models. Its simple, two pole design – inspired by our Red Label Unna solo tent – is quick to pitch and very stable, and the single vestibule can be completely rolled away to maximize air flow through the full mesh inner tent door. In addition, catenary curves along the bottom edges of the outer tent create space that both allows for constant air flow and also ensures that the outer tent is stretched properly for optimal performance.
Prior to its introduction, the Niak went through well over 250 backcountry nights of use, in all types of weather, in Scandinavia and the US, as well as in the Alps and in Scotland. Two person users appreciated its light weight, and solo users loved that it offered such roomy luxury at such a surprisingly low weight. All proclaimed it as an outstanding choice for any summer or warm weather trip.
