1 Reviews of the Kyte

By: AlisonBob  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2012   Rating:

We picked up our Kyte from Black Country Caravans in April 2012. I can honestly say that the customer care I have received from Black Country Caravans has been excellent.

I ordered Kyte XL with the following options, Extra Large Kids Room, Front Wall, Bigfeet for the steadies, Front Storage Box, Water and Sink in Kitchen.

The difference between Kyte S and XL is the size of the living area in the Kytes XL the living area is approx 3m X 3m

All windows in the living area are three layered (mesh, plastic, canvas) the majority of the windows are also tinted, and there are zips on the Plastic and Canvas so you have complete flexibility. Within the bedroom pod there are 2 zipped canvas/mesh ventilation panels. Opening of all windows / ventilation panels is done from inside the unit.

The bed is 1.5 wide by 2 metres the bed frame is slatted and the mattress is approximately 100mm high density foam. We have added a 50cm memory foam topper that we had on our previous trailer tent.

Under the bed is a vast storage area plus storage in the kitchen giving some 1500 litres, this does however make the bed quite high (you get a set of steps), I am 6ft 4in and still use them to get into bed.

The under bed storage is accessible using the pack and go system without putting the Kyte up by undoing a few zips, once we loaded all our camping gear however we tend not to use it. The storage in the kitchen can only be accessed once the unit is erected on a Kyte XL – not sure if the Kyte S is the same.

The soft top has an extender there by giving additional storage capacity (250 litres) within this is a zipped pocket in which we place some insulating matting, 4 chairs 2 foot stalls plus the poles for canopy and kids room.

The guy ropes supplied are actually bungies these slide into plastic tabs on the kyte and hook round the pegs this allows for some flexing in the wind when fitted. A storm pole is also supplied which is placed under the single canopy pole is strong winds. The pegs supplied are very heavy duty, hook / V and rock pegs are supplied. I however tend to use delta pegs for the guys and canopy but that is just my preference

One thing I have noticed is that the temperature inside the kyte does not get excessively hot even in bright sunny weather. This is due to the roof of the main unit being twin skinned with a gap of about 5cm between the 2 layers. In addition you are supplied with 4 poles that in really hot weather over about 26C you can extend the gap between the 2 layers by about 30cm. Since I only holiday in the UK I can only wish to try this feature out.

The front wall zips onto the arch on the front canopy and then there are 2 tabs to secure to the side of the canopy and requires pegging at the bottom. Have not tried using this properly, but tried it out on a recent holiday. If you are going to want to use this I think that this should be attached before pegging the canopy so that it fits correctly. The height of the mast may also need to be adjusted for the front wall.

The kitchen comes with 2 60 litre curver boxes which are accessed by lifting the worktop and hob. There are also smaller storage boxes supplied with lids which slide under the shelves at the back wall of the kitchen.

You are unable to use the fridge when in transit as this is covered by canvas. Also remember to unload the fridge when packing up if you don’t have the ability to open the unit up at home.

There are only the 2 of us so we use the Kids room for a wardrobe and storage unit leaving a small area for dressing. The smaller right hand compartment we use for the portaloo.

We had the windforce system retrospectively fitted this automates the erection and closing of the main unit. A large air pump on the side of the trailer pumps air in under the bed resulting in the trailer unfolding and erecting itself leaving you just the canopy to do and this is just a single pole. By changing the pumps location it then sucks out the air resulting in the trailer tent deflating and folding itself back up. The pump in the inflation position can also be used to assist in drying the canvas.

Pros

•Unique looking unit made from top class materials that will last a long time provided looked after

•Quick to erect 30 mins including pegging.

•Spacious living area with zipped in ground sheet.

•The roof side canopies provide a degree of privacy whilst allowing ventilation

•Huge storage capacity

•Functional Kitchen which is easy to use and has large storage capacity

•The front canopy is quite deep so even when cooking you are protected from rain unless its horizontal, able to use our cadac under the canopy irrespective of weather.

•Light weight 500kgs plus 250kg luggage allowance

•Unit is braked and has 14 inch wheels which makes it easy to move around

•Very stable unit in strong winds

•Bright and airy

•I am 6ft 4in and have no height issues as all

•Airco feature keeps trailer cool in sun and helps retain heat in cooler temperature

•Opening / Closing of windows done from inside unit.

Cons

•Cost

•Height of bed

•Groundsheet can billow up in strong winds if these come from the bedside

•Bed area roof is white so bright early morning

•You have to think ahead when cooking, as you are unable to access the storage under the hob once you have started cooking.
