4 Reviews of the Driveaway Sleeper

By: Sy Newitt  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2017   Rating:

I ordered the Khyam Driveaway Sleeper awning to go alongside the offroad trailer tent I have built with the idea of using it for stays of four or five days or longer in one location. I liked the design and I particularly liked the big picture windows that would enable us to sit and look at the mountains of the Scottish Highlands and Inner Hebrides where we spend most of our holidays. And I liked the inner bedroom tent that we could use as a kitchen.

Let's start with the good bit. After ordering the awning I received an email from Khyam telling me that the container carrying the consignment of awnings had not arrived in the UK and gave an approximate arrival date and date of shipment to me. They were true to their word and when the awning was dispatched I received another email from Khyam.

So top marks for communication but sadly that is where the praise ends and I get the cricket bat out.

The Khyam Driveaway Sleeper is big, it is very heavy and it is very poor quality. The first time I erected it a seam along the bottom by the tunnel ripped for some considerable length, the second time I erected it the zip-pull handle came off the zip on the bag and the third time I erected it one of the glassfibre poles that goes across the roof snapped and broke.

And all that happened at home in my garden so it didn't bode well for surviving a brisk Scottish West Highland coastal wind. So I took the awning to our local council tip and heaved it into a skip and replaced it with a Westfield Outdoors Easy Air 510 inflatable awning that is bigger, much better quality and so ridiculously easy to erect and take down that I can have the awning up, pegged out and trimmed in 15-20 minutes on my own.

And the Easy Air only weighs 13kg whereas the steel poled Driveaway Sleeper weighs nearly 22kg.

Khyam's webpage for the Driveaway Sleeper says these words - “the Driveaway Sleeper is ideal for touring and overnight stops.” No it isn't. It is far too heavy and there are too many poles, pegging points and guylines to set out to make it any good for overnight stops. It takes far too long to set-up unless you have a battalion of people to assist.

All in all this experience has been a very expensive and frustrating waste of money and so poor was the quality of the Driveaway Sleeper that I will never buy anything else from Khyam and I would strongly recommend that other people don't either.

Sorry Khyam. Minus 10 out of 10 for the Driveaway Sleeper. If you up your quality to that of Kampa, Vango, Olpro and Westfield Outdoors and you give the Driveaway Sleeper an inflatable frame then I will seriously consider buying one as I love the design but until then.No way.

This is a follow up to my feedback on July 3rd. I emailed Khyam with the same feedback and got a quick reply - my response .

Thank you for the prompt reply. My initial reaction was to be very impressed with the customer service, however this quickly turned to disappointment when I realised that your version of customer service was for me to spend even more with Khyam. In excess of another 100 pounds.

We selected the Driveaway Sleeper because it met our requirements in terms of size and layout so decided to investigate the problems and try one more time. We are life-long campers with 30+ years experience - the problem was with the steel poles, so that's where I started with the investigation - and the problem soon became apparent. The manufacturing process had left sharp edges on the inside diameter of the female ends of the poles and these sharp edges had bitten into the male ends of the poles (in the area of the reduction radius) making disassembly very difficult. Light attention to the sharp edges with a round file took care of this problem. These was a general level of poor quality finish to the inside of the female ends and the outside surface of the male ends - attention with a fine grit paper plus a light smear of oil resolved this.

We tested the improvements over a long weekend at the end of July - a much improved situation - although I would have to say that the poles / sleeve design isn't the best we've ever come across, we have decided to stay with it as the tent layout fit our requirements.

Our end of July test in Derbyshire went much better - so I lifted the rating to 7.

Bought to add space when using our campervan. Tried it last weekend. Instructions seemed to be a poor translation from another language. We are experienced campers but this tent was very difficult to pitch and I have the blood blisters to prove it. Once pitched the layout and extra space was very valuable and we really enjoyed it - until we had to take it down - again very difficult with the steel poles needing a lot of effort to pull apart.

Got this last week- put up in the garden today- one of the leg wires broke folding the leg back up. Most upset. Biggest complaint is there are very few pegging points around the bottom- flapping in the breeze in the garden. I will wait for a response from Khyam and see what they say. If they send me a new pole - I suppose I will have to take it to the local tent shop to get more pegging down loops put on it but not happy at all today. The good point is the shape and size is good- and the bedroom is large. It has the awning tape/beading already on it so threading it on our awning rail on our puck was easy.

Manufacturer's Description

Specifically designed for medium size campervans the Driveaway Sleeper builds on the success of the Driveaway Compact introduced in 2010. With a 4 berth inner tent included in the bedroom area, the Driveaway Sleeper is ideal for touring and overnight stops.

The Driveaway Sleeper includes a separate, tailored living area groundsheet.

Connection Options
Figure of 8 (Optional - Not Included)
The plastic 'figure of 8' accessory pack allows easy connection to vehicle gutters or 'J' rails.

Pole & Clamp Kit (Optional - Not Included)
If your vehicle has a gutter, the pole & clamp kit allows for a quick and easy connection onto the vehicle. The pole slides into the sleeve on the awning, you drop this into the gutter on the vehicle and clamp it in place.

Kador (Double Kador / Driveaway Strip / Gusset Strip) (Optional - Not Included)
If your vehicle has an awning rail, 'c' channel or wind-out awning then you could use a Kador in conjunction with a set of figure of 8 strips to connect the awning onto your vehicle. You simply slide the Kador into the channel on your vehicle, pitch the awning (which has an identical beading sewn onto it) connecting the two beadings together with the figure of 8 strips. There are different sized Kador's available, to establish which size Kador you need, measure the diameter of the channel on your vehicle (this can be done fairly easily by sliding a drill into the slot) if you are unsure which Kador you require please give us a call on 0844 850 4401

For further information on connection options or any other questions, please consult our technical help department on 0844 850 4401.
