5 Reviews of the Driveaway XC

By: Ged1  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2016   Rating:

Hi I have used this tent to attach to a VW t5. In general the tent stands up to the weather. One of the weak points of this tent is the poles. Fiber glass poles tend to break in strong winds and this tent in no different. Get some spare sections so you can replace them when they crack. If you do not replace as soon as you can it will comprise the other poles, and in the end cause them to crack. At this stage its time to go home. But a few spares at around thirty quid will see you a few more nights under the stars. This tent with stood 30mph winds and gusts over this, then the poles broke. Might sound daft, but in very strong winds if you can take it down rather than looking at it to see if it will survive is a recommendation. I have done just that lol.

We have owned this Driveaway XC for a couple of years now so I feel qualified to leave a review.

We wanted a large awning so 2 adults and 4 kids could travel together with plenty of space. We had a small one previously but it was no more than a bit of storage.

We viewed and researched many awnings before settling on this one. Most did not come up to size or were silly money. This one ticked all the boxes. It's very much a quality tent with a connecting bit for the van, morseo than the standard leaky awnings with separate groundsheets.

It has a fully sewn-in groundsheet. Ours is still intact even with having tables and chairs on it on grass and gravel so is proven strong. The main tent is 5000HH so extremely waterproof. We have been lucky with the rain and not seen a lot but the Driveaway XC shrugged it off regardless. All of the zips and cords are still intact. All seams, netting, loops etc are intact just as we bought it. A sign of a cheap tent is the seams starting to go very quickly - not this awning. I am pleased with the build quality.

Assembly involves sliding fibreglass poles through the outside sleeves and compressing them to secure them in pins. This is a standard method of construction for many tents and awnings (plus allows assembly in the rain keeping it all dry inside). This is a large tent though, the poles are long and care is needed when compressing them. Do it in pairs and compress them evenly at the same time and you will have no problems. We learnt the hard way and cracked a pole on our first attempt. Spares are easily available and we have not broke any since that learning session. Learn from our mistake! Once the assembly is mastered you will have a cosy, very spacious, well made, watertight awning for many years. No other in its price range comes close.

We bought the driveaway XC as an extension to our Mazda Bongo.

It is easy to erect with color coded poles. It has fantastic space and we found it easy to connect it to our van. However we have had major problems with the poles spliting and breaking. On one occasion, whilst on a camping trip, we were called by the campsite to return to our tent as quickly as possible as the whole thing had collapsed whilst we had gone out for the day. On inspection, two of the poles had again split and caused the tent to collapse ripping it in three places. The winds were only 18mph so not strong. All the other much older tents were still standing! We had to abandon our trip and head home early with two disappointed children. The company I bought the tent from sent me a new tent, since then we have had to return poles and get new ones several times. We are now fed up and we are sending it back for a full refund!

In short, tent design- great, poles- not flexible or strong enough!

I would be interested to know if anyone else has had the same problem as when I called Kyham they said we were the first, I can't believe that!

A huge tent compared to our old one (Royal Biarritz 6) and even with the bedroom in it seems to have loads of space inside. Connecting up to the van was a bit of a nightmare but its our first time of setting it up properly.

There were a couple of small leaks from either side of the front window area, can't understand why they didn't run a zip or even more velcro around the bottom of the front panel and even on the side doors, I feel this is the only thing that lets it down really.

Easy to put up, some of the poles creaked and cracked a bit, maybe this is because they're new, but between two of you its easy to erect.

Overall a huge tent which lacks the detail I've mentioned above. Lots of space for your money and the sewn in groundsheet is excellent considering we had a flow of water running under ours during our first trip away. We stayed dry and relatively warm in this tent, I'd recommend it especially as it connects to the van easily.

In early 2010 we sold our Vango tent to buy this awning to fit with our VW Campervan.

We spent several weekends away with it and a week of staying at more than one campsite. It was quit easy to put up between two of you and with a bit of effort, it goes up quite quickly and we were very impressed with it's size, in short, it's huge, even with the two bedrooms inside, in fact, we could probably have squeezed the van inside it if we'd wanted!

The unit holds up fairly well against the weather and despite wind and rain and some considerable movement, it remained solid enough and dry.

However, there were some issues:

Firstly, the awning attachment section flapped a good amount, was not very adjustable, didn't attach all that well and ultimately, ended up with two tears in it from general use.

Secondly, the giant front window which offers panoramic views does not zip at the bottom, there's just three sets of velcro - so, in wind, you've a nice big draft blowing straight through there. Exactly how much extra a full zip all round would have cost I do not know, but I can tell you now, it would have been worth it.

Thirdly, the colour coded poles of different lengths seem to be of varying flexibility, we suffered two that became damaged or fractured whilst being bent into tension and only the swift application of ducktape and cable ties saved them from being unusable.

Finally, in anything but the lightest of breezes, the material is quite noisy when it moves and whilst the bedrooms were excellent and well used both for sleeping and a good way of sectioning off storage, sleeping was sometimes difficult due to the noise of the material.

Overall, this could have been a brilliant unit, but, it seems a little unsteady in any breeze and there are obvious issues with the awning attachment and the front view panel just needed a bit more thought; but if you can overcome those issues, it's a cavernous unit which offers enormous living space as well as the prospect of a comfortable reasonably sized bedroom area.

Manufacturer's Description

An excellent addition to your Campervan. This awning provides generous living space, with fantastic panoramic windows. The bedroom has a dividing wall to provide two sleeping areas, ideal for family holidays. Featuring the new 'eyebrow' door canopy.

Connection Options
Figure of 8
The plastic 'figure of 8' accessory pack allows easy connection to vehicle gutters or 'J' rails.

Pole & Clamp Kit (Optional - Not Included)
If your vehicle has a gutter, the pole & clamp kit allows for a quick and easy connection onto the vehicle. The pole slides into the sleeve on the awning, you drop this into the gutter on the vehicle and clamp it in place.

Kador (Double Kador / Driveaway Strip / Gusset Strip) (Optional - Not Included)
If your vehicle has an awning rail, 'c' channel or wind-out awning then you could use a Kador in conjunction with a set of figure of 8 strips to connect the awning onto your vehicle. You simply slide the Kador into the channel on your vehicle, pitch the awning (which has an identical beading sewn onto it) connecting the two beadings together with the figure of 8 strips. There are different sized Kador's available, to establish which size Kador you need, measure the diameter of the channel on your vehicle (this can be done fairly easily by sliding a drill into the slot) if you are unsure which Kador you require please give us a call on 0844 850 4401

For further information on connection options or any other questions, please consult our technical help department on 0844 850 4401.
