2 Reviews of the Motordome Excelsior

We have 7 (yes Seven) Khyam tents and when we bought a 20 year old Hymer motorhome for the cold winter trips we naturally thought of buying a Khyam. Same ridgidome construction, bullet proof and what a great design, so practical, Khyam think of everything. Even used it as a straight tent with its bedroom inner once when the Hymer was in for repairs and it makes a great normal tent, wonderful windows to look out through and just so quick to put up, even if it's windy, just follow Khyam's instructions and put the tri-guys out as soon as you've opened the roof section.

A great product, really sturdy and so much better than anything from the other manufacturers at equal or greater prices.

I would have preferred to have got the Khyam Motordome classic, but the door height on my Talbot express dictated that it had to be the Khyam Excelsior, at 3metres square room space- when erected is very useful with fairly versatile windows and openings.

However an absolute pig if not nigh impossible to erect if it is at all windy the light weight poles and dome shaped construction act like a parachute if the wind gets under it and they just take off! Due to it's height it is a bit of a reach to the centre when beginning to erect if you are a bit on the short side, I got the feeling that the whole thing was going to get up and just spider away whilst I was 'fighting' to get it up/hold it down, the quick erect joints did not fill me with a sense of security more a sense of incredulity.

The main hype with this tent is that it is quick to erect- 'can be erected in 5 minutes' but then it takes a lot longer than a conventionally constructed tent if it is at all windy! And of course the pegging out has still to be done.

I would recommend erecting the awning 'all things being equal' so that you drive at it forwards so that you have a good chance of getting accurate positioning for the re-attachment of the awning, pole and clamps are my favoured method of attachment to the van if you are likely to be off and about in your van a lot ,as it is possible to get free and reattach with out practically taking the whole thing down with this method.

In summary it looks the part when it is up - gives a great space, with huge headroom and versatile ventilation, do get a ground sheet (extra) else condensation can be a problem, build quality ,could be better as stitched peg loops X 2 fell off in the first 12 hours, supplied pegs are of mediocre quality suggest you get some sturdy replacements.

If you are fanatical about folding your tent up tidily this is not really possibly with this form of construction, it's more a case of hold it down and put the bag over it's head! quite a bulky item when stowed.

I have put this tent up 3 times now and I still feel trepidation about repeating the exercise.

I am a fit retired lady with better than average DIY skills the most practical biddy you are likely to meet.

The Khyam Excelsior drive away awning- not sure if I love it or hate it , but mine is called Sidney! Good luck, plenty of end of season deals to be had on this tent.
