3 Reviews of the Cubo

Worst awning I have ever seen, defininitely NOT fit for purpose.

Returning back to the shop.

Tubes keep buckling at the corners and will not stand alone. It says takes 10 minutes to erect but spent 9 hours playing about with it, had loads of help from other campers but still could not keep it up, worst awning on the site.

Absolutely not fit for purpose as a drive-away awning.

1) Only 3 doors have mosquito netting, the door leading into the tunnel adjoining the van does not. Therefore it is not possible to sit in the awning mosquito-free!

2) The doorway into the tunnel area gapes at the bottom as the zips are only down the sides and the bottom is held ‘shut’ by one small section of velcro (the other doors, despite also only having zips down the sides, are at least strengthened by the addition of the mosquito net bottom zips). Thus, when the campervan is driven away and the awning is left on site i) rain, particularly when driving from that side, will get inside and flood the integral groundsheet and ii) the security of the awning is compromised, eg a dog/cat/any-other could easily get inside.

3) The roof and sides of the tunnel area adjoining the van cannot be rolled up and secured effectively when leaving the awning on site as there are no fittings (toggle and straps) to facilitate this. Despite efforts to strap the voluminous folds of material down, they still would not protect the gape in the bottom of the door and continued to blow around in the wind with the potential for damage/tearing to be caused and possibly worse in high winds. This is not a secure way of leaving a 'stand-alone’ or 'drive-away’ awning as described.

Would certainly not recommend.

Olpro Cubo awning purchase to pitch review.

This awning was the perfect size slightly bigger than my old awning, at 300 cm x 300cm, but ideal for our quick weekend getaways where we only need somewhere to sit in the evening and store and air our sleeping bags and other stuff when we are out and about.

I always semi pitch my new purchases to check for missing poles etc. And to see how it goes together, on quick inspection I soon found what looked like a manufacturing fault with the large canopy door, near to the Velcro patches which hold the zip rain flaps in place I noticed two 2mm holes approx. 1 ½ inches apart, these were the same at each of the Velcro patches, so not a random material snag.

I immediately emailed the sales team, with my findings and concerns and they immediately sent out a replacement unit, and picked the faulty one up at the same time, certainly cannot fault the quick response from Olpro, however the replacement unit also had the same faults, but as I was very near to my next trip away, I informed the sales person I had been in contact with saying I did not have time to wait for another replacement and would use the unit and seal the holes with seam sealer, no response was returned. Since returning from my holiday and contacting Olpro again to resolve the issue I have been constantly fobbed of with “someone will contact you tomorrow”

On arrival at my pitch we erected the awning which was extremely easy and could probably be done by one person on a calm day, there is a length of fabric at the intersection of the poles which is tied to the bottom pole to support the light hanging hook on the inside (brilliant idea 1) this needs to be done before you insert the flysheet pins in the ends of the poles, there is also a ventilation panel which also needs to be opened or left closed again before insertion of flysheet pins, you will not be able to reach to open or close once erected.

The detachable ground sheet took a bit of figuring which way it went, and also the wind kept lifting it up ( couldn’t find any peg fixing point to pin it down.)

At the side door entrances the ground sheet unclips to allow the sidewall of the ground sheet to lie flat, so you don’t trip entering through the J doors,

(Brilliant idea 2) however the is no such provision at the doorway to the awning tunnel to lay the ground sheet flat so could cause a trip in the dark.

The awning tunnel attaches to the van two way; one via the figure of eight strips and the other by throwing three detachable traps over the top of your van and anchoring at the other side. My awning only had one trap attached to the tunnel at the centre, the two other traps pictured in the advertising photos where not there, there was not even any buckles sewn into the fabric (manufacturing fault 2) and just flapped about. So I am left with the figure of eight option, the tunnel side panels have elastic tension cord to allow you to “fit the tunnel around the side of your vehicle, but the was no means of pegging the bottom down, there are however pockets in the bottom sides which I assume you need to find some means of weighing down the sides, as I went around the awning I was getting the feeling someone was taking the mick, at every point around the base of the awning found a length of shock cord, and had to tie my own knot in them before I could peg it down.

There are only four guy line with this unit, one at each corner attached at two points to the canvas and one to the ground via a sliding ring system, the guy lines are black, which as we found makes them difficult to see even in daylight.

Now to take a proper look round, I knew about the holes on the main canopy door, but I found more, this time they looked like sewing machine overruns, one area looked like it had been machine gunned (manufacturing fault 3) So more sealing to do, it had by now started to rain, now was the time to check out for leaks and I soon found them, I normally expect a few around the Velcro patches which I did, no big deal usual to get in this area, but there was one I could not pin point, but one of concern was from the tunnel stitching, the seam had been sealed on the inside of the awing, but it was leaking though to the inside the tunnel area and then running through the zips into the inside, this was my biggest source of water ingress.

And to top it all off one of the slip rings on the guy ropes broke, with a gust of wind.

So to conclude;

Negative points;

Poor manufacturing / quality control;

Numerous holes in the canvas which should not be there

Untied shock cords, could easily have been lost during unpacking of awning.

Missing vehicle attachment points and straps for tunnel

No means of pegging tunnel side walls

Weak sliding ring on guy lines

Inability to lay ground sheet flat at tunnel door

Leaks into living area through tunnel roof seam and door zips

Positive points;

Easy to erect

Good sized living area with no loss of space

Plenty of light

Detachable ground sheet (easy to clean mud off)

J Doors with good zip rain covers

Addition support for interior light hook

Fits around vehicle well, although could have been a bit wider

Conclusion;

Unfortunately this unit did not live up to Olpro’s statement of good quality design for the British outdoors. This may have been a one off manufacturing issue although I received two units with faults I somehow don’t think so. And Olpro’s response to my warranty issues if frankly lacking in substance and have since refused to reply to my emails.

Would I recommend a tent product from Olpro? Based on my experience- NO.

Would I be purchasing an Olpro Tent product in the future… Unlikely

Manufacturer's Description

The CUBO Breeze Drive away Campervan Awning is perfect for that bit of extra space for living, sleeping or storage. The inflatable beams make setting up a Breeze, only taking 10 minutes to erect, the Cubo Breeze is much quicker and simpler to pitch than a poled awning.

How to attach the Awning to your campervan:

The best way to attach the awning is by threading the beading on the tunnel into the awning rail or the Guttering using the Figure of Eight attachment. If your campervan does not have either of these, there are straps included which go over the top of the vehicle, either side of a pop up roof if you have one, and peg down the other side.
